About the Lab
Professor Nam Hee Kim's research lab focuses on environmental toxicology and metabolic disease epidemiology, with a particular emphasis on the health impacts of low-level heavy metal exposure—such as lead, mercury, and cadmium—on renal and liver function in the general population. The lab investigates the associations between environmental pollutants, biomarkers of exposure (e.g., blood and urinary levels), and chronic diseases like chronic kidney disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and pancreatic cancer. Using large-scale, nationally representative cohort data such as KNHANES and objective biomarkers like urinary cotinine, the lab aims to clarify controversial associations in environmental health science. Their work also extends to gastrointestinal oncology, particularly the role of tumor markers in colorectal neoplasia and cancer progression.

Both elevated serum CEA and CA 19-9 levels were associated with the presence of ACRN, as well as CRC. Elevated CEA levels were also associated with the presence of overall CRN. Moreover, both CEA and CA 19-9 levels were correlated with the severity of CRN.
