About the Lab
Professor Namyong Lee's research lab specializes in biomedical engineering and infectious disease diagnostics, with a focus on developing rapid, point-of-care diagnostic technologies for microbial infections. The lab investigates antimicrobial resistance in pediatric populations, particularly antibiotic-resistant pneumococci, and explores innovative methods for early pathogen detection using molecular and imaging techniques. A key research direction involves applying advanced signal processing and mathematical modeling—such as wavelet-based inverse methods—to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce turnaround time in clinical microbiology. The lab also examines non-antibiotic interventions in chronic disease management, including virtual reality-based therapies for neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s disease.

15[Purpose] In this study, we examined the effects of virtual reality dance exercise on the balance, activities of daily living and depressive disorder status of Parkinson's disease patients. [Subjects] Twenty patients were assigned either the experimental group (n = 10) or the control group (n = 10). All participants received 30 minutes of neurodevelopment treatment and 15 minutes of functional electrical stimulation 5 times per week for 6 weeks. The experimental group additionally performed 30 m
To investigate the nasal carriage of antibiotic-resistant pneumococci by children, anterior nasal swabs were done for 4963 children <5 years old in 11 countries in Asia and the Middle East. In total, 1105 pneumococci isolates (carriage rate, 22.3%) were collected, 35.8% of which were found to be nonsusceptible to penicillin. Prevalence of penicillin nonsusceptibility was highest in Taiwan (91.3%), followed by Korea (85.8%), Sri Lanka (76.5%), and Vietnam (70.4%). Penicillin resistance was relate
FA-Pneumo is a rapid test with high sensitivity for the detection of bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes in sputum and ETA specimens and could aid in determining antibiotic therapy.
The healthcare industry is in dire need of rapid microbial identification techniques for treating microbial infections. Microbial infections are a major healthcare issue worldwide, as these widespread diseases often develop into deadly symptoms. While studies have shown that an early appropriate antibiotic treatment significantly reduces the mortality of an infection, this effective treatment is difficult to practice. The main obstacle to early appropriate antibiotic treatments is the long turna
Because the Radon transform is a smoothing transform, any noise in the Radon data becomes magnified when the inverse Radon transform is applied. Among the methods used to deal with this problem is the wavelet-vaguelette decomposition (WVD) coupled with wavelet shrinkage, as introduced by Donoho (1995). We extend several results of Donoho and others here. First, we introduce a new sufficient condition on wavelets to generate a WVD. For a general homogeneous operator, whose class includes the Rado
This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl, 0-200 mg/kg), thiamine dilauryl sulfate (TDS, 1,000 mg/kg), and ultrasound (37 kHz, 380 W) on reducing Salmonella Typhimurim, mesophilic aerobic bacteria (MAB), and coliforms on chicken skin. Chemical and physical treatments were applied for 5 min either singly or jointly, and Salmonella previously inoculated on chicken skin were quantitatively assessed using brilliant green agar, and the populations of MAB and coli
The immutability of the blockchain technology facilitates it to establish a general consensus in a trustless environment, enabling a wide range of new applications, including distributed general-purpose data management and digital data sharing marketplace. This immutability, however, presents disadvantages for the blockchain technology, when it is used in other areas where the modification of data in blockchain is demanded. In this study, we propose a method for building modifiable blockchains i
BACKGROUND: The role of bacterial microbiota in the pathogenesis of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is unclear. We aimed to compare the bacterial microbiome of disease-invaded lesions and non-invaded lung tissue from NTM-PD patients. METHODS: We analyzed lung tissues from 23 NTM-PD patients who underwent surgical lung resection. Lung tissues were collected in pairs from each patient, with one sample from a disease-involved site and the other from a non-involved site. Lung
We investigated the evolution of fluconazole resistance mechanisms and clonal types of Candida parapsilosis isolates from a tertiary care hospital in South Korea. A total of 45 clinical isolates, including 42 collected between 2017 and 2021 and 3 collected between 2012 and 2013, were subjected to antifungal susceptibility testing, sequencing of fluconazole resistance genes ( ERG11 , CDR1 , TAC1 , and MRR1 ), and microsatellite typing.
The QMAC-dRAST system provided rapid results and represents an alternative to conventional AST methods. The QMAC-dRAST with colony isolates produced more reliable results for staphylococci and enterococci than the QMAC-dRAST with PBCB. The QMAC-dRAST system also performed comparably to BMD and the VITEK-2 system.
