About the Lab
Professor Nok-ri Kim's research lab focuses on biomedical materials and health disparities, with a strong emphasis on developing bioactive implant materials for aneurysm treatment and analyzing socio-demographic determinants of health outcomes in diverse populations. The lab investigates innovative biomaterials—such as polymer-coated platinum coils—to enhance tissue response and thrombosis organization, while also conducting large-scale epidemiological studies on healthcare access, diet quality, and women’s decision-making in India and Korea. The integration of biomedical engineering with public health research enables the lab to address both clinical and societal challenges in healthcare delivery.

Experimental aneurysms treated with the novel coil materials were compared with the aneurysms treated with bare platinum coil (GDC) and currently available polymeric coil material (Matrix II ®).
Materials and Methods
A sw
OBJECTIVES: Although environmental factors influence lifestyle choices, few studies have examined how individual-level and neighborhood-level socio-demographic factors interact to affect diet quality in Korea. We investigated the associations between multilevel factors and diet quality among Korean adults and explored potential interactions by gender and age.METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 42,035 adults from 1,671 towns using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition
Childlessness is an increasingly visible phenomenon. Once predominantly associated with high-income settings, it now spans diverse cultural, economic, and political contexts, including the Global South. Among recent demographic shifts, childlessness has emerged as one of the most ideologically charged and widely debated topics in public discourse, particularly through media narratives. Although media are often overlooked in mainstream public health models, they play critical roles as structural
Abstract Introduction Violence against children (VAC) has been linked to substance abuse later in life. However, most evidence of this association comes from high-income countries (HICs) and is understudied in the context of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods This study used the latest Violence Against Children Surveys (VACS) data from 2017-2019 across eight LMICs. The main exposure variable was defined as having experienced at least one type of violence (physical, sexual, or emot
BACKGROUND: Limited access to healthcare services among women leads to adverse health outcomes such as high maternal mortality, untreated chronic conditions and poor reproductive and child health. METHODS: We used data from India’s National Family Health Survey 2015–16 and 2019–21 to examine district-level changes in the percentage of women facing problems in accessing healthcare (Affordability, Proximity, Permission and Support/Companionship). We also estimate how much improvement has occurred
Abstract Background Women’s ability to make decisions in personal and family matters is a crucial component of their agency, often shaped by geographically clustered and hierarchically structured social and cultural factors. Despite its importance, district-level research on women’s decision-making in India is scarce, especially considering the country’s diverse socio-cultural contexts. This study examines women’s participation in decision-making across 720 districts in India, with a focus on ex
A household has a ‘safely managed’ water service if water is continuously supplied from an improved source. In India, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of households connected to an improved water source over the past few decades. However, much less is known about the extent to which these households are receiving uninterrupted supply and the geographic variation in water service disruptions. Using new data from the fifth round of India’s National Family Health Survey in 2021, we
Everyday discrimination (ED) has adverse effects on health and well-being. This study highlights understudied trends in the distribution, correlates, and geographic variation of ED among Indian adults aged 45 and above. The analysis of 61,722 participants in the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (2017-18) revealed significant state/union territory (UT)-level variation. While Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, and Lakshadweep had comparatively lower ED scores than the national average, Jammu and Kashmi

India is poised to supply nearly a quarter of the global incremental workforce in the coming decades, yet subnational employment statistics remain lacking. Using data on 108,785 females aged 15–49 years and 101,839 males aged 15–54 years from the fifth National Family Health Survey (2019–2021) of India, this study provides estimates of key employment indicators across 720 districts of India, disaggregated by type of occupation, gender and place of residence. We implemented a four-level Bayesian

Rapid increases in extreme heat across India are driving urgent demand for household cooling, which is critical for health, productivity and dignity. While fans are widely used, access to air conditioners (ACs) and coolers remains highly unequal, concentrated in urban and wealthier populations. Our analysis of National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data also shows significant inter-state variation in the cooling divide. India’s increasing dependence on energy-intensive cooling raises significant c
