About the Lab

Professor Paek Sang-Hyon's research lab specializes in the fundamental and applied aspects of liquid crystal (LC) materials and polyimide-based alignment layers, with a strong focus on molecular-level interactions governing LC alignment, pretilt angle control, and electro-optical performance. The lab investigates how polymer structure—particularly functional groups, side chains, and backbone rigidity—affects surface polarity, anchoring energy, and alignment stability through techniques such as rubbing, spectroscopy, and nanoindentation. Their work bridges polymer chemistry, surface science, and device physics, aiming to design advanced alignment layers for next-generation display and photonic technologies.

Microscopic Molecular Reorientation of Alignment Layer Polymer Surfaces Induced by Rubbing and Its Effects on LC Pretilt Angles
K.-W. Lee, Sang‐Hyon Paek, Alan Lien, C. J. Durning, Hiroyoshi Fukuro
SJR Q1Macromolecules

The orientation of functional groups, side chains, and repeat units at the surface of a liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer (AL) polyimide was changed by rubbing with a cotton velvet cloth. It was discovered that rubbing induced polar functional groups and repeat units to reorient out-of-the-plane of the surface, and it made nonpolar aliphatic side chains partially reorient inward, toward the bulk of the film. The polar AL surface provided relatively small LC pretilt angles while polyimides with

A mechanistic picture of the effects of rubbing on polyimide surfaces and liquid crystal pretilt angles
Sang‐Hyon Paek, C. J. Durning, K.-W. Lee, Alan Lien
SJR Q2Journal of Applied Physics

A mechanistic picture of the effects of rubbing on polyimide alignment layer (AL) surfaces and nematic liquid crystal (LC) pretilt angles (ΘP), leading to establishing a mechanism of determination of ΘP’s, was proposed on the basis of the study of the change in surface polarity of a polyimide AL with the rubbing force and density, and the subsequent changes in the ΘP and the azimuthal anchoring energy. In the regime of relatively weak rubbing where inhomogeneous, patchy surface modification (the

SJR Q2Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Four different structure polyimide thin films based on 1,4‐phenylene diamine (PDA) and 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) were synthesized by using two different dianhydrides, pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), and their residual stress behavior and mechanical properties were investigated by using a thin film stress analyzer and nanoindentation method. The residual stress behavior and mechanical properties were correlated to the morphological

Wide-Band Reflective Polarizers from Variable Pitch Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Films
Young‐Jun Kwon, W. J. Lee, Sang‐Hyon Paek, I. Kim, Kang‐Il Song
SJR Q3Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals

Due to their periodic helical structure, cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) have a unique ability to selectively reflect visible light. CLC films reflecting a broad wavelength band were made by inducing a pitch gradient in CLC through a diffusion of small molecules and through a thermal diffusion between two CLC oligomer films with different pitch gradients.

Chemical Structural Effects of Polyimides on the Alignment and Electro-optical Properties of Liquid Crystal Cells
백상현, Wonseok Dong
http://www.cheric.org/article/442121

The nature of the nematic liquid crystal (LC) alignment induced by the rubbed polyimide (PI) align¬ment layers (ALs) and the electro-optical (EO) properties of the LC cells are expected to depend on the chemical and physical features of the PI. By employing five pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)-type PIs having different functionalities, we have studied the effects of the PI뭩 structure and chemistry on the align¬ment characteristics and the cell뭩 EO properties.

Effect of the environment on the measured values of the adhesion of polyimide to silicon
Sang‐Hyon Paek, Kangwook Lee, C. J. Durning
SJR Q2Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology

We have studied the effects of liquid environments on the measured adhesion of PMDA-ODA polyimide to a silicon substrate by the blister and peel tests. The debonding pattern and adhesion strength were very sensitive to the liquid. For example, introducing pure methanol at the crack tip caused stick-slip debonding, with a high debonding angle, and severe plastic deformation of the polyimide film in blister tests, and greatly increased the adhesion strength in the peel test. The effects were progr

This study demonstrated the use of a thermally crosslinked polyimide (PI) for the liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer of an LC display (LCD) cell. Polyamic acid was prepared using 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA) and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). The 6FDA−ODA-based polyimide (PI) prepared by the thermal cyclic dehydration of the polyamic acid (PAA) was soluble in various polar solvents. After forming a thin film by mixing trifunctional epoxide [4-(oxiran-2-ylmethoxy)-N,N-bi

http://www.cheric.org/article/898166

Relationship between alignment layer polymer surface structures and liquid crystal display parameters
Kang‐Wook Lee, Alan Lien, Sang‐Hyon Paek, C. J. Durning, Hiroyoshi Fukuro
SJR Q3Macromolecular SymposiaOA

Abstract The polar alignment layer (AL) surface provided relatively small liquid crystal (LC) pretilt angles while polyimides with long alkyl side chains gave relatively large LC pretilt angles. The results suggest that LC pretilt angles, in addition to an anchoring effect, are greatly affected by both electronic and steric interactions between LC molecules and a polyimide alignment layer surface. Rubbing with a cotton cloth induces functional groups, side chains, and repeat units at the surface
