About the Lab
Professor Park Sunhee's research lab specializes in epidemiological and biostatistical methodologies with a focus on population health, particularly in chronic inflammatory diseases and adolescent health. The lab investigates histological disease activity in ulcerative colitis, emphasizing its predictive value for clinical outcomes, and applies advanced multilevel modeling and survival analysis techniques to improve the rigor and validity of health data interpretation. Research also extends to public health surveillance systems, especially infectious disease monitoring in Korea, and explores modifiable health risks such as sleep duration and obesity in youth populations. The lab integrates statistical innovation with real-world public health applications to inform clinical practice and policy.

15UC patients with histological remission have a significant 52% RR reduction in clinical relapse/exacerbation compared with those with histological activity. Histological remission is also superior to endoscopic and clinical remission in predicting clinical outcomes. As ~30% of patients with endoscopic and clinical remission still have histological activity, addition of histological status as an end point in clinical trials or practice has the potential to improve clinical outcomes.
BACKGROUND: Multilevel models were designed to analyze data generated from a nested structure (e.g., nurses within hospitals) because conventional linear regression models underestimate standard errors and, in turn, overestimate test statistics. OBJECTIVES: To introduce 2 types of multilevel models, the random intercept model and the random coefficient model, to describe the correlation among observations within a cluster, and to demonstrate how to identify the superior model. METHOD: The concep
An underlying assumption of proportional hazards models is that the effect of a change in a covariate on the hazard rate of event occurrence is constant over time. For scholars using the Cox model, a Schoenfeld residual‐based test has become the disciplinary standard for detecting violations of this assumption. However, using this test requires researchers to make a choice about a transformation of the time scale. In practice, this choice has largely consisted of arbitrary decisions made without
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) operate infectious disease surveillance systems to monitor national disease incidence. Since 1954, Korea has collected data on various infectious diseases in accordance with the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act. All physicians (including those working in Oriental medicine) who diagnose a patient with an infectious disease or conduct a postmortem examination of an infectious disease case are obliged to report the disease to
Short sleep duration and obesity are common health concerns in youth. This study of South Korean adolescents explores the association between the two conditions analyzing secondary data from the 2007 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey. The sample is representative of the South Korean adolescent population (N = 73,836). For data analysis, analysis of variance, chi-square test, and logistic regression were used. Findings indicated that (a) sleep duration is inversely associated with levels
BACKGROUND: Although research has established the existence of an association between smoking and depression among adolescents, researchers have not reached consensus on the nature of the association. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this paper is to review the literature, to examine the nature of the relationship between smoking and depression in adolescence, and to suggest future research directions. METHOD: A literature search was conducted from the following six databases: (a) Ovid MEDLINE, (b) CI
PURPOSE: This study explores the cross-sectional relationship between Internet use and depressive symptoms in South Korean adolescents. DESIGN AND METHODS: Existing data, the three-wave Korean Youth Panel Survey, were analyzed. The sample was a cohort representing the population of second-year students at Korean middle schools in 2003 (N = 3,449). Multivariate logistic regression was used. RESULTS: A one-unit increase in Internet use was positively associated with a 20.7% increase in risk for de
PURPOSE: This study examined factors affecting the transition from experimental smoking at baseline to two types of daily smoking, temporary daily smoking, and continued daily smoking, at 1-year follow-up. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n = 4,903 U.S. adolescents). Baseline predictors were selected based on Problem Behavior Theory. RESULTS: Important problem behavior theory-related predictors of smoking were the number of f
Based on greater involvement in smoking among first-year middle schoolers, smoking prevention strategies should be provided to elementary schoolers rather than middle schoolers. A risk-taking tendency and delinquent behaviors should be considered as proxy measures to detect the high-risk group for smoking initiation.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were (a) to identify smoking behavior by following a cohort representative of the population of 4th grade elementary schoolers in South Korea over a four-year period (2004-2007), and (b) to explore predictors of smoking initiation among non-smokers in Wave 1. Methods: Secondary data, the Korea Youth Panel Study, was analyzed in this study. First, frequencies or percentages were calculated to identify smoking behavior (i.e., smoking initiation, smoking intensit
