About the Lab

Professor Ryoonee Kim's research lab focuses on corporate finance, corporate governance, and the strategic implications of firm-level financial decisions in dynamic market environments. The lab explores how institutional reforms, such as the Sarbanes–Oxley Act, and macroeconomic shocks, including trade liberalization and financial crises, influence earnings management, capital structure, and firm performance. A key research direction examines the role of corporate group affiliations, customer concentration, and international communication (e.g., English earnings calls) in shaping financial behavior and market reactions. The lab also investigates the socio-economic impacts of public housing policies, particularly through community integration and urban revitalization strategies.

Customer Concentration and Earnings Management: Evidence from the Sarbanes–Oxley Act
Ryoonhee Kim, Luo Wei-qing
SJR Q1European Accounting Review

This paper investigates whether the level of customer concentration can moderate the effect of the Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) on the earnings management of U.S. corporations. Large customers can act as a mechanism for reducing agency problems by pressuring supplier firms to be more efficient. Large customers may act as certifying agents for a supplier, and they may reduce information asymmetries about the supplier. These two channels suggest that customer concentration may affect corporate

Financial Weakness and Product Market Performance: Internal Capital Market Evidence
Ryoonhee Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis

Abstract Using a data set of Korean business groups in the period 1999–2006, just after the Asian Financial Crisis, this study shows how business groups’ financial leverage can lead group-affiliated firms to lose market share to industry rivals. This analysis reveals that the negative effect of group leverage is greater when an affiliated firm is financially weak. Additionally, high group leverage is more detrimental to firms operating in fast-growing industries, discouraging affiliated firms fr

Ryoonhee Kim
SJR Q3Journal of Derivatives and Quantitative Studies 선물연구OA

The purpose of this paper is to use China’s World Trade Organization accession as a quasi-natural experiment and examine whether conglomeration affects firmss’ ability to respond to a significant increase in competitive pressure. Conglomerate segments have higher sales growth and higher profitability than singlesegment firms, when they face intensified import competition.
