About the Lab

Professor Sae-jun Lee's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal and liver diseases, with a primary emphasis on hepatic encephalopathy, biliary tract cancer, and hepatic fibrosis. The lab investigates novel therapeutic strategies using pharmacological agents such as rifaximin and cordycepin, as well as molecular mechanisms involving matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), oxidative stress, and NF-κB signaling in inflammatory and fibrotic conditions. Clinical and translational studies are central to the lab’s work, including randomized trials and endoscopic interventions for biliary stone disease. The research integrates molecular biology, cell culture models, and clinical data to explore disease mechanisms and treatment efficacy in Asian populations, particularly Koreans.

BACKGROUND: Biliary tract carcinoma is an aggressive cancer, with median survival rarely exceeding 6 months. There is currently no established palliative standard of care. A Phase II trial was conducted to study a combination of oral capecitabine and gemcitabine (CapGem) as first-line therapy in patients with advanced and/or metastatic biliary carcinoma.
