About the Lab
Professor Sang Hoon Lee's research lab specializes in liver regeneration, transplantation medicine, and metabolic liver diseases, with a strong focus on improving outcomes in liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma through innovative cell-based therapies and surgical interventions. The lab investigates the use of stem cell co-cultures to enhance hepatocyte function and viability, explores salvage liver transplantation for recurrent HCC, and addresses complications such as intestinal failure-associated liver disease. Their work bridges tissue engineering, clinical transplantation, and molecular oncology to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

15We have generated human hepatocyte spheroids with uniform size and shape by co-culturing 1∶1 mixtures of primary human hepatocytes (hHeps) from partial hepatectomy specimens and human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) in concave microwells. The hADSCs in spheroids could compensate for the low viability and improve the functional maintenance of hHeps. Co-cultured spheroids aggregated and formed compact spheroidal shapes more rapidly, and with a significantly higher viability than mono-cultured
Salvage liver transplantation (LT) is considered a feasible option for the treatment of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We performed this multicenter study to assess the risk factors associated with the recurrence of HCC and patient survival after salvage LT. Between January 2000 and December 2011, 101 patients who had previously undergone liver resection (LR) for HCC underwent LT at 3 transplant centers in Korea. Sixty-nine patients' data were retrospectively reviewed for the analysis
Intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) is a serious complication of parenteral nutrition (PN). Studies have shown that the amount and content of intravenous lipid emulsions (LEs) used is closely related to the development of IFALD. We report 2 cases of IFALD reversed by switching from a combination lipid emulsion containing fish oil to fish oil monotherapy (Omegaven; Fresenius Kabi Austria Gmbh, Graz, Austria). Patients initially received PN containing SMOFlipid 20% (SMOF; Fresenius
BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a well-known condition, but ICH restricted to the thalamus is less widely studied. We investigated the prognostic factors of thalamic ICHs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy patients from January 2009 to November 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients who demonstrated spontaneous ICH primarily affecting the thalamus on initial brain computed tomography (CT) were enrolled. Patients were categorized into 2 groups based on their Glasgow Outcome Scale
This study analyzed factors related to allograft fibrosis in clinically stable pediatric liver transplantation patients. Pediatric patients who underwent liver transplantation from January 1997 to January 2008 and further underwent 10-year protocol biopsies were examined. Grades of inflammation and fibrosis were classified based on Banff criteria and the Liver Allograft Scoring (LAF) system, respectively. Risk factors for fibrosis were analyzed using logistic regression. Sixty-six patients with
BACKGROUND: The absence of CDK4 amplification in liposarcomas is associated with favorable prognosis. We aimed to identify the factors associated with tumor recurrence in patients with well-differentiated (WD) and dedifferentiated (DD) liposarcomas. METHODS: From 2000 to 2010, surgical resections for 101 WD and DD liposarcomas were performed. Cases in which complete surgical resections with curative intent were carried out were selected. MDM2 and CDK4 gene amplification were analyzed by quantita
The use of hepatitis B core antibody-positive (HBcAb+) grafts for liver transplantation (LT) has the potential to safely expand the donor pool, as long as proper prophylaxis against de novo hepatitis B (DNHB) is employed. The aim of this study was to characterize the longterm outcome of pediatric LT recipients of HBcAb + liver grafts under a prophylaxis regimen against DNHB using hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine and hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG). From June 1996 to February 2013, 49 patients r
BACKGROUND Primary intraventricular hemorrhage (PIVH) is an uncommon type of intracerebral hemorrhage. Owing to its rarity, the clinical and radiological factors affecting outcomes in patients with PIVH have not been widely studied. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 112 patients (mean age 53 years) treated for PIVH at our institution from January 2004 to December 2014. Clinical and radiological parameters were analyzed 3 months after initial presentation to identify factors associ
