About the Lab
Professor Sang Min Park's research lab focuses on the epidemiological and population-based investigation of modifiable lifestyle and environmental factors influencing chronic disease outcomes. The lab explores the interplay between metabolic health, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and cognitive decline, with a particular emphasis on early-life and midlife risk factors. Key research directions include the impact of smoking, obesity, hypertension, periodontal disease, and urban environmental exposures—such as green space—on long-term health trajectories. 15PURPOSE: Although many studies have demonstrated that smoking, alcohol, obesity, and insulin resistance are risk factors for cancer, the role of those factors on cancer survival has been less studied. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study participants were 14,578 men with a first cancer derived from a cohort of 901,979 male government employees and teachers who participated in a national health examination program in 1996. We obtained mortality data for those years from the Korean Statistical Office.
Among Korean young adults, stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension, compared with normal blood pressure, were associated with increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease events. Young adults with hypertension, defined by the 2017 ACC/AHA criteria, may be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Residing in urban regions with greater green space coverage may lead to a reduced risk of CVD. Urban planning intervention policies that increase urban green space coverage could help to reduce the risk of CVD.
In this nationally representative study, we found that obesity was associated with lower risk of cognitive decline among mid- and old-age population.

Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the association between the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and the risk of fracture. We identified relevant studies by searching three electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library) from their inception to October 20, 2010.
