About the Lab
Professor Sang-Yoon Lee's research lab focuses on the intersection of medical image processing, noise modeling, and labor law reform in South Korea. The lab conducts advanced research on Poisson-Gaussian noise modeling and multiscale image denoising techniques—particularly using the Non-Subsampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT)—to improve low-dose X-ray imaging for patient safety. Concurrently, the lab explores legal and institutional frameworks for labor rights, especially the protection of subordinate labor relationships and the legalization of public sector labor unions, with a focus on university employees and government workers. The research integrates technical innovation in medical imaging with socio-legal analysis to address real-world challenges in healthcare and labor policy.

15The noise distribution of images obtained by X-ray sensors in low-dosage situations can be analyzed using the Poisson and Gaussian mixture model. Multiscale conversion is one of the most popular noise reduction methods used in recent years. Estimation of the noise distribution of each subband in the multiscale domain is the most important factor in performing noise reduction, with non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) representing an effective method for scale and direction decomposition. I
Noise reduction is important for X-ray images because it can reduce radiation exposure to patients. X-ray image noise has a Poisson-Gaussian distribution, and recently, noise analysis and removal in multiscale transformations have been widely implemented. The nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) is a multiscale transformation suitable for medical images that separates the scale and direction. This study proposes a Poisson-Gaussian noise-removal method using NSCT shrinkage that is based on t
The concept and standard of subordinate labor relationship plays a role of distinguishing one guoup of employees who are protected by the labor laws with the others who are not. Because, in Korea, there is no statute defining the concept and standard of subordinate labor relationship, it has relied on the cases rended by the Supreme Court of Korea. The Court, however, is divided as to the concept and standard of subordinate labor relationship. Previously, the Court adopted the rule applicable to
The Study on the Legalization of the Government Employees Labor Union Lee, Sang Yoon The current Article 33(2) of the Constitution provides that “only those government employees who are specified by the statute shall have the right to organize the union, bargain collectively and engage in concerted activities.” In accordance with the Constitution, the Korean government submitted the Bill to the Congress in the late 2004. The public sector labor relations are quite different from th
Under the civil law system, the individuals were regarded as free and equal each other. Accordingly, employees had equal position with their employer and the Government had the position not to engade in their labor relations. However, it has revealed that labor relations were not equal and free. The emplyees had no choice but to sell their labor in order to survive and to work under employer’s control and direaction which is called as subordinate labor relationship. The Government has begun to p
University employees are composed of various groups of workers such as professors, lecturers, teaching assistants, administrative employees and medical resident, etc. in order to accomplish the university goals. The difficult problem arises since there exists so many various statutes and case laws applicable to each group of university employees. As for professors, the High Education Law, and the Private School Law are applied, while the labor Standard Law and the Labor Union Law are not. As to
Bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) is essential for reconstructing crime scenes using the shape and distribution of bloodstains. Luminol, which emits blue light in a chemiluminescent reaction with hemoglobin, is commonly used to detect latent blood. Artificial blood substitutes, designed for luminol reactivity or bloodstain pattern reproduction, are widely used in forensic experiments. These artificial blood substitutes, including synthetic and spatter blood, are commercialized with distinct func
Currently in Korea, the labor unions organized independently in a company have changed their organization form into the branch of industrial union. While the company union is regarded as an independent legal union under the Korea labor law, the branch of industrial union is not an legal union. Accordingly, many questions has arisen as to the Constitutional and legal right of the branch of industrial union. First of all, a question was put to court as to whether branch of industrial union has the
In bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA), a field of forensic science, there has been active discussion on the estimation of the area of origin of impact spatter. However, there is no established methodology to quantitatively analyze the area of origin of a swing cast-off pattern. To quantitatively analyze the methodology of previous research on estimation of area of origin, a device for generating uniform swing cast-off patterns was produced. Using artificial blood, 10 swing cast-off patterns were
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have gained significant attention for extraordinary materials properties, which can lead to their enormous potential for biosensing applications. In particular, the richness of electronic and chemical properties of 2D TMDCs, and thereby biosensing performances can be tailored by functionalization and hybridization with extrinsic materials, including substitutional doping, metal nanoparticle functionalization, and formation of 2D heter
In this study, we propose a novel method for modeling dynamic hysteresis. Hysteresis is a widespread phenomenon that is observed in many physical systems. Many different models have been developed for representing a hysteretic system. Among them, the Duhem model is a classical nonlinear dynamic hysteresis model satisfying the properties of hysteresis. The purpose of this work is to develop a novel method that expresses the local dynamics of the Duhem model by a linear system model. Our approach
