About the Lab
Professor Sanghee Park's research lab focuses on organizational behavior, compensation systems, and the psychological and strategic dynamics underlying pay-for-performance (PFP) systems. The lab investigates how employees perceive and respond to complex PFP structures, including merit pay, bonuses, and long-term incentives, with an emphasis on longitudinal development of leader-member exchange (LMX) and the role of mental construal levels in shaping perceptions. The lab also explores the design and behavior of computational agents in digital marketplaces, particularly in information and e-commerce systems, where strategic incentives and decision-making complexity intersect. These interdisciplinary efforts bridge behavioral science, organizational psychology, and artificial intelligence.

15Although it has been argued that leader-member exchange (LMX) is a phenomenon that develops over time, the existing LMX literature is largely cross-sectional in nature. Yet, there is a great need for unraveling how LMX develops over time. To address this issue in the LMX literature, we examine the relationships of LMX with 2 variables known for changing over time: job performance and justice perceptions. On the basis of current empirical findings, a simulation deductively shows that LMX develops
Using two‐year longitudinal data from a large sample of US employees from a service‐related organization, the present study investigates the relative effects of three forms of pay‐for‐performance ( PFP ) plans on employees’ job performance (incentive effects) and voluntary turnover (sorting effects). The study differentiates between three forms of pay: merit pay, individual‐based bonuses, and long‐term incentives. By definition, these PFP plans have different structural elements that distinguish
Abstract Compensation research has generally considered pay‐for‐performance (PFP) perceptions in terms of how people react to only a single PFP form or PFP systems as a whole, regardless of the complexity of the compensation system pertaining to the individual. Synthesizing construal level theory, expectancy theory, compensation activation theory, and Call and Ployhart's (2020) theory of firm value capture from employee job performance, we provide insights into how employees develop PFP percepti
The University of Michigan Digital Library (UMDL) is an open system that allows third-parties to build and integrate their own profit-seeking agents into the marketplace of information goods and services. The profit-seeking behavior of agents, however, risks inefficient allocation of goods and services, as agents take strategic stances that might backfire. While it would be good if one could impose mechanisms to remove incentives for strategic reasoning, such mechanisms are not possible in the U
As computational agents are developed for increasingly complicated e-commerce applications, the complexity of the decisions they face demands advances in artificial intelligence techniques. For example, an agent representing a seller in an auction should try to maximize the seller?s profit by reasoning about a variety of possibly uncertain pieces of information, such as the maximum prices various buyers might be willing to pay, the possible prices being offered by competing sellers, the rules by
Although researchers have long discussed the mixed results regarding the effectiveness of pay for performance (PFP), compensation research has not fully captured the complexity of the current PFP environments. Using individual data gathered from diverse organizations through an online survey, this study shows the current status of PFP environments that employees now face within an organization. The theoretical and practical implications for understanding the complex environments in current organ
Companies regularly use multiple types of pay-for-performance plans to motivate and sustain high performance levels. Although research generally confirms that pay-for-performance plans can influence these outcomes, it is unclear how effective different pay plans are relative to each other. The current study examines how three different forms of pay-for-performance plans—merit pay, individual-based annual bonuses and long-term incentive plans—influence employee future performance when they operat
Extant compensation literature has indicated that pay-for-performance can influence employee performance. There is little research, however, that differentiates the effects of certain forms of pay-for-performance plans on future performance. By applying the precepts of expectancy theory to specific components of the pay-for-performance plans and using longitudinal data from a sample of 739 US employees in a service-related organization, this study demonstrates different effects for merit pay, bo
The purpose of this study is to investigate consumers' purchase behavior toward healthy menus at a fast food restaurant based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour(TPB) by Ajzen(1985). A total of 417 samples was collected through online survey from March 1 to March 14, 2009. Using statical package SPSS WIN 18.0, exploratory factor analysis reliability analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. The findings of this research indicated that appearance consciousness significantly influe

Using a sample of 450 Korean firms, this study investigates the moderating effects of collective pay-for-performance (PFP) on the relationship between total quality management (TQM) and firm performance. Specifically, we focus on the differential effects of three forms of collective PFP (team incentives, profit sharing, and stock ownership) on the TQM-labour productivity relationship, based on the premise that each form of collective PFP has different sets of characteristics. Our results provide
