About the Lab
Professor Sanghun Park's research lab specializes in sustainable building technologies with a focus on radiant heating and cooling systems, particularly Thermally Activated Building Systems (TABS) and Radiant Ceiling Panel Systems (RCPS). The lab investigates thermal performance, energy efficiency, and indoor thermal comfort through advanced analytical modeling, experimental validation, and building energy simulation. Research directions include optimizing thermal mass utilization, load shifting via time-lag effects, and improving system design for residential and commercial buildings under varying climatic and occupancy conditions.

11The Radiant heating and cooling system could save building energy by using the mechanism of radiant heat transfer. TABS(Thermally Activated Building System) is one of the radiant heating and cooling system. The main difference between the other radiant system and TABS is the usage of the time-lag effect by storing heat energy at the concrete. It enables the building to shift peak loads to night time. Because TABS are installed at the building structure there are some considerations when design T
Thermally Activated Building System(TABS) is a radiant heating and cooling system which uses structures as thermal storage by embedding pipes in a concrete slab. Using TABS as the cooling system in residential buildings can reduce energy consumption and peak loads. But the ratio of cooling loads handled by TABS is low in the residential buildings which are significantly influenced by outside condition because condensation and over-cooling may occur. However, recent interest on energy-saving build
The radiant ceiling panel system (RCPS) is a light-weight type of radiant heating and cooling system which uses a ceiling as a radiant surface. To obtain improved thermal comfort and maintain the room temperature comfortably, it is important to estimating the cooling capacity of the RCPS. The purpose of this study is to presents an experimental methodology to estimate the cooling performance of the RCPS. This paper also presents an estimation result of the cooling capacity of the RCPS using the
Compared to Packaged Terminal Air Conditioning Systems, Radiant Cooling Systems have the advantage of energy saving and thermal comfort. Thermally Activated Building System (TABS) is one of the radiant heating and cooling systems. The main difference between TABS and other radiant systems lies in the usage of the time-lag effect of storing heat energy in the concrete. Current energy usage in summer time is concentrated within a specific time by using Packaged Terminal Air-Conditioner (PTAC). Due
A cross-sectional online survey was conducted to 1) investigate the prevalence of workplace violence and workers' emotional distress, 2) explore factors associated with workplace violence, and 3) assess workers' needs for preventive measures. A total of 763 community mental health workers participated in Korea. Among them, 85.85% of workers experienced workplace violence, including verbal (74.31%), emotional (66.45%), infectious (47.44%), informational (42.60%), sexual (32.50%), and physical (23
The Radiant Ceiling Panel (RCP) is a type of radiant cooling system that uses a ceiling as a radiant surface for radiant heat exchange. The RCP has advantages of energy saving and reduced size of blow fans due to the reduced distribution energy. Also, it is not affected by interior partitions or zoning. Today, an increasing interest is being shown to extend the application of RCP, in order to save on the initial investment cost and to avoid the use of HVAC systems that cause uncomfortable air fl
The purpose of this study is to propose an 3-dimensional analytical model for analyzing heating performance of the access floor integrated radiant model. Proposed analytical unit model was divided into several control volumes considering material and shape of the panel components, and then thermal resistance network model is applied. The numerical analysis was carried out using finite volume method which satisfies heat balance equation. Proposed method was evaluated its suitability by comparing

The thermally activated building system (TABS) is a thermal storage that uses the concrete slab to reduce the peak cooling load. A radiant cooling/heating system is typically designed with consideration on a peak load in a steady state to size the capacity. However, the design of the TABS should consider the time-lag effect due to the high heat capacity of the concrete slab in an un-steady state. Temperature of the concrete slab cannot be changed instantly, which may cause overcooling, overheati
The packaged terminal air conditioner, the typical cooling system for the residential buildings, consumes a large amount of electricity in a short period time during peak hours. In order to reduce the peak load and conserve the electricity, the thermally activated building system can be used as a secondary system to handle the partial cooling load. However, the thermally activated building system may cause condensation and under-cooling. Thus, design of both systems should be performed with care
The thermal performance of the building envelope is mainly required for guaranteeing a comfortable and hygienic interior climate. A roof is a part of the building envelope which provides protection from the thermal damage of the sun. To improve this protection ability, we can consider using a ventilated roof, which has a ventilation layer known as a cavity, beneath the roof cover panel. The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of such factors as the slope of the roof, size or sha
