1920년대 염상섭의 소설에 대한 연구는 근대성의 성취와 현실의 인식이라는 두 가지 요소에 초점을 맞추어 왔다. 두 경우 모두 주된 특징을 짚은 것은 사실이지만, 만세전(萬歲前)을 전후로 한 소설 세계의 변화 양상을 설득력 있게 해명하지는 못하고 있다. 이에 작품들의 내적인 연속성을 확인하면서 기존 연구의 일면적 평가를 필요가 있다. 여기서는 초기 삼부작과 만세전(萬歲前)을 주 대상으로 하여, 그의 소설이 환멸에서 풍속에 이르는 부르주아 개인의 역정을 그리는 일련의 과정을 보여 주고 있으며, 그 과정에서 현실이 현상으로, 내면이 심리로 대체되어 가는 일관된 경향을 띠고 있음을 밝혔다. 이러한 변화는 주체와 세계의 맞섬이라는 틀에서, 봉건성이 만연한 현실의 위력에 의해 개인의 이상이 스러져가는 과정의 결과이기도 하다.

이상의 대표작〈날개〉는 널리 알려진 바와는 달리 작품 자체에 대한 세밀한 검토를 요하는 작품이다. 이 소설에 대한 가장 큰 오해는, 공간적인 대비 속에서 주인공이 밝고 긍정적인 세계로 나아간다고 보는 것이다. 하지만 작품을 꼼꼼히 살피는 것만으로도 이러한 파악이 잘못임이 분명해진다. 〈날개〉의 서사는 아내에 대해서 남편이자 남성으로서 자신의 성적인 정체성을 수립하고자 하는 주인공의 기도와 실패로 이루어져 있다. 주인공의 기도는 아내와의 성합을 바라는 욕망으로 현상하며, 이에 의해 서사가 추동된다. 다섯 차례의 외출 및 네 차례의 귀가를 거멀못으로 하는 서사의 진행과 그에 따른 부부관계의 변화 모두 이에 말미암는다. 〈날개〉가 보여주는 서사구성 및 인물구성상의 이러한 특징은 사회적, 심리적 측면에서 분석할 때 식민지 상황의 폐색성을 잘 반영하는 것이다. 성적 정체성을 통해 자신을 추스르려는 행위의 작품화는, 작가의 의도가 어디에 있든간에, 자기실현의 가능성이 봉쇄된 봉건적인〔19세기
