About the Lab

Professor Sangjun Yoo's research lab focuses on urological oncology and lower urinary tract diseases, with a strong emphasis on prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and urothelial carcinoma. The lab investigates advanced imaging techniques such as multiparametric MRI for cancer detection and characterization, explores the role of metabolic and lifestyle factors in prostate and bladder diseases, and examines novel biomarkers—including the microbiome and vitamin D—linked to disease progression and symptom burden. The lab also evaluates the impact of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, such as ureteroscopic biopsy and systemic therapies in castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging for prostate cancer: A review and update for urologists
Sangjun Yoo, Jeong Kon Kim, In Gab Jeong
Korean journal of urologyOA

Recently, imaging of prostate cancer has greatly advanced since the introduction of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). mpMRI consists of T2-weighted sequences combined with several functional sequences including diffusion-weighted imaging, dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging, and/or magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging. Interest has been growing in mpMRI because no single MRI sequence adequately detects and characterizes prostate cancer. During the last decade, the role of mpMR

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influences of lifestyle and metabolic syndrome (MetS) on the prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) requiring treatment using a large historical cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included 130 454 men selected from the National Health Information Database of the National Health Insurance Service in South Korea. Men were divided into the two groups according to the presence of MetS. A generalised estimating equation was used to assess the predictors o

Risk of Intravesical Recurrence After Ureteroscopic Biopsy for Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma: Does the Location Matter?

SJR Q1Journal of Endourology

INTRODUCTION: To investigate whether ureteroscopic biopsy (URS-Bx) for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) before radical nephroureterectomy affects intravesical recurrence (IVR). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of the 515 patients receiving radical nephroureterectomy for UTUC between 1998 and 2012, 387 patients were included for the analysis. URS-Bx was performed in 69 patients (17.8%). Patients were stratified according to tumor location, and the impact of URS-Bx on IVR was evaluated after adjusting

New drugs in prostate cancer
Sangjun Yoo, Se Young Choi, Dalsan You, Choung‐Soo Kim
SJR Q1Prostate InternationalOA

The standard primary treatment for advanced prostate cancer has been hormonal therapy since the 1940s. However, prostate cancer inevitably progresses to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) after a median duration of 18 months of androgen deprivation therapy. In patients with CRPC, docetaxel has been regarded as the standard treatment. However, survival advantages of docetaxel over other treatments are slim, and the need for new agents persists. In recent years, novel agents, including ab

Microbiome and Prostate Cancer: Emerging Diagnostic and Therapeutic Opportunities
Sung Jin Kim, Myungchan Park, Ahnryul Choi, Sangjun Yoo

This review systematically addresses the correlation between the microbiome and prostate cancer and explores its diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Recent research has indicated an association between the urinary and gut microbiome composition and prostate cancer incidence and progression. Specifically, the urinary microbiome is a potential non-invasive biomarker for early detection and risk evaluation, with altered microbial profiles in prostate cancer patients. This represents an advance

Objectives To evaluate the impact of serum vitamin D level on male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Patients and Methods Men with LUTS who visited the outpatient clinic of the urology department at one of two hospitals between March 2014 and April 2017 were eligible for inclusion in the study. The impact of vitamin D on LUTS was evaluated using multivariate analysis to adjust for age, body mass index, prostate‐specific antigen, testosterone, glycated haemoglobin, physical activity and prosta

We aimed to assess the relationship between lifestyle-related variables, metabolic syndrome, and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men ≥ 40 years. We also assessed the impact of these variables on quality of life. From 2014 to 2020, 5355 men who underwent health check-ups with I-PSS questionnaires at our institute were included in the analysis. The impact of LUTS on sleep disorders and moderate to severe degrees of stress were assessed. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the v

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

We evaluated the surgical margin status after radical prostatectomy according to sites positive for prostate cancer on standard 12-core transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. Among patients who underwent radical prostatectomy at Boramae Medical Center, 520 patients with preoperative prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level < 20 ng/mL and locally confined prostate cancer on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging, treated with nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, were included in the analysi

SJR Q1The Prostate

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the optimal high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) prevention in men not taking statin medication using a large historical cohort. METHODS: We initially selected 130 454 men who underwent health checkups in 2009 from the National Health Information Database of the National Health Insurance Service. After excluding 36 854 men with BPH in 2009, and 45 061 men for statin use, 48 539 men were ultimately included in the analysis. A K
