About the Lab

Professor Sangyeom Kim's research lab focuses on molecular oncology and translational cancer research, with a primary emphasis on tumor suppressor signaling pathways such as Hippo and PI3K/AKT in cancer development and therapy resistance. The lab investigates the roles of key regulatory proteins like YAP/TAZ and LATS1/2 in liver tumorigenesis and explores targeted therapeutic strategies to overcome radioresistance in glioblastoma. Additionally, the lab contributes to clinical cancer genomics, particularly in Asian populations, through high-throughput sequencing and biomarker discovery. The integration of molecular mechanisms with clinical applications defines the lab’s translational research approach.

Hippo signaling acts as a tumor suppressor pathway by inhibiting the proliferation of adult stem cells and progenitor cells in various organs. Liver-specific deletion of Hippo pathway components in mice induces liver cancer development through activation of the transcriptional coactivators, YAP and TAZ, which exhibit nuclear enrichment and are activated in numerous types of cancer. The upstream-most regulators of Warts, the Drosophila ortholog of mammalian LATS1/2, are Kibra, Expanded, and Merli

Outcomes of Treatment for Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors: Different Clinical Features Associated with Neurofibromatosis Type 1
황인경, 한승민, 김효선, 김상겸, 김효송, 신규호, 서창옥, 유철주, 한정우

Purpose Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are a rare subtype of sarcoma that occur spontaneously or in association with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). This study aimed to clinically differentiate these types of MPNSTs. Materials and Methods The study reviewed 95 patients diagnosed with and treated for MPNST at Yonsei University Health System, Seoul, Korea over a 27-year period. The clinical characteristics, prognostic factors, and treatment outcomes of sporadic MPNST (sMPNST) a

measuring pH, titratable acidity, and variations in pH utilizing an ISO method. Materials and Methods: Six fruit-flavored liquors were investigated. An orange juice and three kinds of soju were selected as the control beverage. The pH and titratable acidity of the beverages were determined by 1 M NaOH until the pH 5.5 and 7.0 (recorded as TA5.5 and TA7.0, respectively). All measurements were performed in triplicate. The process of ISO 28888 was used for measurement of the pH variation ( pH) usin

Purpose: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a malignant brain tumor with poor prognosis. Radioresistance is a major challenge in the treat ment of brain tumors. The development of several types of tumors, including GBM, involves the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathway. Upon activation, this pathway induces radioresistance. In this study, we investigated whether additional use of selective inhibitors of PI3K isoforms would enhance radiosensitivity in GBM. Materials and Me

Purpose: With the revision of the Organ and Transplantation Act in 2018, the hand has become legal as an area of transplantable organs in Korea. In January 2021, the first hand allotransplantation since legalization was successfully performed, and we have per formed a total of three successful hand transplantation since then. By comparing and incorporating our experiences, this study aimed to provide a comprehensive reconstructive solution for hand amputation in Korea. Materials and Methods: Rec

Purpose With the emergence of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, profiling a wide range of genomic alterations has become a possibility resulting in improved implementation of targeted cancer therapy. In Asian populations, the prevalence and spectrum of clinically actionable genetic alterations has not yet been determined because of a lack of studies examining high-throughput cancer genomic data. Materials and Methods To address this issue, 1,071 tumor samples were collected from five

Perianal Paget disease: a report of 2 cases
박윤영, 김문식, 정진옥, 김상겸, 송승용, 정기양, 김남규

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm. Perianal Paget disease (PPD) is a subset of EMPD manifesting perianal lesions. Two cases of PPD in Severance Hospital are described in this article. A 65-year-old female and 78-year-old male patients visited our institution because of an unhealed perianal skin lesion despite treatment for a long period with topical agents. PPD was diagnosed by skin biopsies in both cases, and the patients underwent surgical treatment. Clinical manif

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is an uncommon opportunistic fungal infection often presents in immunocompromised patients. Direct invasion of the intestinal walls by spores from ingested food is the main pathogenetic mechanism of this disease, which usually takes place in stomach and colon. Early diagnosis is critical, especially in vascular invasive types, due to its high mortality rate close to 100%. In the past when appropriate diagnostic tools were not available, mucormycosis were frequently

Multiple-system atrophy (MSA) is an adult-onset, sporadic, progressive neurodegenerative disease. Clinically, the cardinal features include autonomic failure, parkinsonism, cerebellar ataxia, and pyramidal signs in any combination, of which autonomic failure is an integral component in the diagnosis. Pathologically, MSA is characterized by α-synuclein-positive glial cytoplasmic inclusions and neuronal loss, predominantly in the basal ganglia, brainstem, cerebellum, and intermediolateral cell col

Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine the erosive potential of several carbonated waters and to confirm the availability of a simple ISO protocol for screening the erosive potential of drinks. Methods: A total of six carbonated waters were tested. Three products (Lemon-Sparkling water, Seagram, and Trevi) were domestic, and the other three (Perrier, San Pellegrino, and Rosbacher) were imported. Two kinds of carbonated drinks (Coca-Cola and Sprite) were used as controls. The erosiv

Behcet's disease has been recognized as a systemic vasculitis characterized by the involvement of multiple organs such as orogenital ulcers, eye lesions including uveitis and optic neuritis, and skin lesions including folliculitis and erythema nodosum. Vascular involvement occurs occasionally and is classified into thrombosis and aneurysm. However, massive gastrointestinal bleeding from arterial aneurysm is a rare manifestation of intestinal Behcet's disease. Recently, we experienced a case of i

Chronic sclerosing dacryoadenitis is a rare and under-recognized chronic inflammatory disease of the lacrimal gland. We describe 2 patients with a localized type of chronic sclerosing dacryoadenitis. Both patients presented with a slowly growing painless mass of the eyelid mimicking a tumorous lesion. The morphologic findings of the masses excised under the clinical diagnosis of lymphoma closely recapitulate those of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis (Kuttner tumor). Immunohistochemical staining d

Achalasia Combined with Esophageal Cancer Treated by Concurrent Chemoradiation Therapy
박준철, 이용찬, 김상겸, 김유진, 신성관, 이상길, 김호근, 김충배

Achalasia is a rare neurological deficit of the esophagus that produces an impaired relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and decreased motility of the esophageal body. Achalasia is generally accepted to be a pre-malignant disorder, since, particularly in the mega-esophagus, chronic irritation by foods and bacterial overgrowth may contribute to the development of dysplasia and carcinoma. We present a case of a 51-year-old man with achalasia combined with esophageal cancer who has had dysp
