About the Lab

Professor Seo-yeon Yang's research lab focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells, with a central emphasis on the calcium-binding protein secretagogin (SCGN). The lab investigates how SCGN's structural dynamics, particularly its Ca²⁺-dependent dimerization and conformational changes, regulate insulin exocytosis. Additionally, the lab explores the psychological and social impacts of online gaming, especially MMORPGs, on real-life interpersonal competence in young adults. The research integrates molecular biology, mass spectrometry, and behavioral science to bridge cellular mechanisms with human behavioral outcomes.

Secretagogin affects insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells by regulating actin dynamics and focal adhesion

SJR Q1Biochemical JournalOA

Secretagogin (SCGN), a Ca(2+)-binding protein having six EF-hands, is selectively expressed in pancreatic β-cells and neuroendocrine cells. Previous studies suggested that SCGN enhances insulin secretion by functioning as a Ca(2+)-sensor protein, but the underlying mechanism has not been elucidated. The present study explored the mechanism by which SCGN enhances glucose-induced insulin secretion in NIT-1 insulinoma cells. To determine whether SCGN influences the first or second phase of insulin

Calcium Ion Induced Structural Changes Promote Dimerization of Secretagogin, Which Is Required for Its Insulin Secretory Function

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract Secretagogin (SCGN), a hexa EF-hand calcium binding protein, plays key roles in insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells. It is not yet understood how the binding of Ca 2+ to human SCGN (hSCGN) promotes secretion. Here we have addressed this question, using mass spectrometry combined with a disulfide searching algorithm DBond. We found that the binding of Ca 2+ to hSCGN promotes the dimerization of hSCGN via the formation of a Cys193-Cys193 disulfide bond. Hydrogen/deuterium exchange mas

The Influence of Game Motivation on the Interpersonal Competence through Social Behavior in MMORPG
Seo-Yun Yang, Su‐Mi Choi
Journal of Korea Game Society

Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the functions of daily living, physical and cognitive functions, and functional recovery training services of elderly residents in long-term care facilities. Method : We sent surveys to representatives of the facilities and analyzed the data for 73 care facilities that we received via email. Each facility has selected one resident for each of the eight groups. The functions of daily living, cognitive function and physical function, and functional

Purpose: This study was conducted to confirm the provision standards and appropriateness of functional recovery training services performed on residents in long-term care facilities. Methods: Twenty-eight service providers working in four long-term care facilities applied the functional recovery training services to 63 older residents for 15 days, integrating them with their existing daily tasks. The contents recorded by the service providers on checklists were analyzed, and the experiences of a
