About the Lab
Professor Seong-Joon Kim's research lab specializes in neuro-ophthalmology and autoimmune inflammatory optic neuropathies, with a focus on understanding the clinical features, diagnostic criteria, and long-term outcomes of conditions such as ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy, chronic relapsing inflammatory optic neuropathy (CRION), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). The lab investigates the role of autoantibodies, particularly MOG-IgG, in disease progression and treatment response, and explores prognostic factors in spinal and cervical spine surgery-related visual and functional outcomes. The research also includes rare conditions like chorioretinal involvement in chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), emphasizing early detection and long-term monitoring.

15BACKGROUND: The incidence, clinical manifestations, and contributory factors in ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy (EON) have not been widely studied. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 857 patients who took ethambutol for treatment of tuberculosis identified 89 patients who complained of decreased vision after initiation of treatment and were therefore referred to the ophthalmology clinic of Seoul National University Hospital, Korea, between January 2003 and December 2005. BACKGROUND: Key clinical features of chronic relapsing inflammatory optic neuropathy (CRION) include relapsing inflammatory optic neuritis (ON) and steroid dependency, both of which have been reported among patients with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibodies (MOG-Abs). We investigated the relevance of the presence of serum MOG-IgG with the current diagnostic criteria for CRION among patients with idiopathic inflammatory optic neuritis (iON). METHODS: Retrospective reviews of a database
Chorioretinal lesions are not uncommon in patients with CGD and they may affect vision. Regular screening of patients with CGD and long-term follow-up of CGD chorioretinopathy patients should be performed to define the lesion, natural history, and pathogenesis.
Preoperative VA is a prognostic factor for postoperative VA and VF. Preoperative VF is predictive of postoperative VF and postoperative VA in cases with severe VF loss.
OBJECTIVE: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is often complicated by subsidence, pseudoarthrosis, kyphosis, and graft donor site morbidities. To decrease the occurrence of these complications, various types of cages have been developed. We designed this retrospective study to analyze and compare the efficacy and outcomes of ACDF using double cylindrical cages (DCC) (BK Medical, Seoul, Korea) versus an anterior cervical plating system with autogenous iliac crest grafts. METHODS: Fort
Importance: A proportion of people with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) have a relapsing disease course and persistent anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein immunoglobulin G (MOG-IgG) seropositivity. Few studies have investigated whether treatment of the first MOGAD attack is associated with the long-term disease course and/or MOG-IgG seronegative conversion. Objective: To investigate the association of time to treat the first acute MOGAD attack with re
BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effectiveness of binocularity-stimulating treatment in children with residual amblyopia following occlusion therapy for more than 6 months. METHODS: Of patients with amblyopia caused by anisometropia and/or strabismus, patients with residual amblyopia following more than 6 months of occlusion therapy were included. Subjects underwent one of the following types of binocularity-stimulating therapy: Bangerter foil (BF), head-mounted display (HMD) game, or BF/HMD combinat
Classification of IXT based on the degree of near stereopsis offers a useful tool for the assessment of initial sensory status as well as postoperative prognosis. Also, a lower age at first detection of IXT and a lower best-corrected visual acuity were associated with poor near stereoacuity.
