About the Lab

Professor Seong-Joon Koh's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), with a particular emphasis on intestinal inflammation, colitis, and colitis-associated cancer. The lab investigates the therapeutic potential of repurposed drugs—such as metformin, fluoxetine, and tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA)—in modulating key inflammatory pathways, especially NF-κB signaling, in intestinal epithelial cells and animal models. Research also explores the impact of psychosocial factors and shift work on functional gastrointestinal disorders, highlighting the interplay between lifestyle, mental health, and gut inflammation. The lab integrates in vitro cell culture, ex vivo assays, and in vivo murine models to dissect immune signaling and identify novel therapeutic targets for IBD and its complications.

산업화된 서양 국가에서 발병수준이 높았던 대장암은 일본과 우리나라를 포함한 아시아 국가들에서도 빠른 속도로 증가하고 있다. 이러한 변화는 식이 습관의 변화와 전반적인 신체 활동의 감소 그리고 비만을 포함한 대사증후군의 요인들과 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 생각되며 많은 역학 연구 에서 이런 가설을 뒷받침하고 있다. 이는 식이 요인, 신체활동 그리고 비만과 대사증후군의 요인들을 조절하여 대장암 발생의 위험을 감소시킬 수 있다는 의미도 포함한다. 대장암발생이 증가함에 따라 향후 대장암으로 인한 사회-경제적 비용이 현저히 증가할 것으로 예상된다. 따라서 대장암의 일차예방에 대한 관심과 함께 대장암 발생의 증가를 억제하기 위한 적극적인 정책과 노력이 필요한 시점이다.
