About the Lab
Professor Seung Hwan Song's research lab focuses on translational and clinical research in autoimmune diseases, critical care medicine, and pediatric and adult surgical outcomes. The lab investigates immune dysregulation in systemic lupus erythematosus, particularly the role of adipokines like leptin and regulatory T cells, while also exploring advanced life support strategies such as VV-ECMO in post-cardiac surgery ARDS. Additionally, the lab examines long-term outcomes in kidney transplantation and innovative pain management techniques in spinal and chest wall surgery, including cryoanalgesia in minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair. The integration of novel imaging techniques, such as 3D body surface scanning, for musculoskeletal deformities like pectus carinatum further highlights the lab’s commitment to improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficacy in pediatric and adult populations.

15Leptin levels are increased in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but little is known on how this correlates with several disease characteristics including the frequency of regulatory T cells (Tregs). Here we compared serum leptin levels with frequency of circulating Tregs in 47 lupus patients vs. 25 healthy matched controls. Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET) is a very rare disease entity, especially in the esophagus. The diagnosis of GNET is based on histologic, immunohistochemical, and genetic findings. The choice of treatment is complete resection, and further treatment options can be considered. Herein, we describe a case of successful surgical treatment of a 23-year-old man with recurrent malignant esophageal GNET.
The portion of IA in cases of pure GGN is significantly larger that expected. More than half of them owned invasiveness components if MIA and IA were combined. Furthermore, there were quite number of lesions with aggressive histologic patterns other than the lepidic subtype. Therefore, further attempts are necessary to differentiate advanced histologic subtype among radiologically favorable pure GGN.
The LAS demonstrated the characteristics of LTx recipients in Korea and the Korean allocation system needs to be revised to reduce the number of patients receiving LTx in Status 0.
