About the Lab
Professor Seung-Hye Choi's research lab focuses on improving healthcare outcomes through interdisciplinary studies in nursing and mental health, with a strong emphasis on organizational culture, leadership, and psychological well-being in healthcare professionals. The lab investigates key factors influencing job satisfaction, turnover intention, and workplace violence among nurses, while also exploring the impact of stress—particularly unemployment stress—on college students. Additionally, the lab develops patient- and family-centered care models, especially in critical care settings, to reduce anxiety and uncertainty. A central theme across the research is promoting mental well-being through empowerment, leadership, and targeted psychosocial interventions.

15Pain is common 12 months post-stroke. The factors associated with CPSP and MSP differ, but are both closely associated with fatigue rather than depression. QOL is the poorest in patients with combined pain. Management of pain and fatigue may be important for improving the QOL in stroke patients.
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) of the gallbladder are representative of an extremely rare group of tumors. We have encountered a patient with a malignant GIST of the gallbladder and presented it with a review of some articles. A 72-yr-old woman initially presented with right upper quadrant abdominal pain, fever and chills. Emergency cholecystectomy was performed under the impression of gallbladder empyema. Liver metastasis was found at 7 months postoperatively and the patient expired 9
Cancer cachexia is a syndrome accompanying weight loss, skeletal muscle atrophy, and loss of adipose tissue in patients with advanced cancer. Since interleukin-6 (IL-6) is one of core mediators causing cancer cachexia and kimchi can modulate IL-6 response, we hypothesized dietary intake of kimchi can ameliorate cancer cachexia. In this study, we studied preemptive administration of kimchi can ameliorate mouse colon carcinoma cells colon (C26) adenocarcinoma-induced cancer cachexia and explored a
Purpose: This study was done to assess nursing students’ practice of patient safety management (PSM), identify factors affecting PSM and provide basic data to develop education programs to strengthen students’ competencies for patient safety. Methods: In this descriptive research the practice of PSM by nursing students was examined and predictive factors were identified. Participants were junior and senior nursing students from 7 universities in 7 cities. Self-report questionnaires were used for
Kimchi is composed of various chemopreventive phytochemicals and profuse probiotics, defining kimchi as probiotic foods. Concerns had increased on the modulation of intestinal microbiota on various kinds of systemic diseases. Under the hypothesis that dietary intake of kimchi can be ideal intervention for either ameliorating colitis or preventing colitic cancer, we performed the study to validate the efficolitic cancery of fermented kimchi on preventing colitic cancer. Using azoxymethane-initiat
Dietary intervention to prevent <i>Helicobacter pylori</i> (<i>H. pylori</i>)-gastric cancer might be ideal by long-term intervention, rejuvenating action, and no risk of bacterial resistance. Stimulated with finding that kimchi prevented <i>H. pylori</i>-gastric cancer, we compared the efficacy of cancer preventive kimchi (cpkimchi) and standard recipe kimchi (skimchi) and the efficacy between fermented kimchi and non-fermented kimchi (kimuchi) in <i>H. pylori</i>-initiated gastric cancer model
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are malignant variants of peripheral nerve sheath tumors that develop at major or minor peripheral nerve branches or at the sheaths of peripheral nerve fibers. These tumors are derived from Schwann cells or pluripotent cells of a neural crest origin. Malignant tumors of the peripheral nerve sheath are most commonly seen in deeper soft tissues, and usually in the proximity of a nerve trunk. MPNSTs of the breast are very uncommon and they have rare
Purpose: Young age at diagnosis has been considered a poor prognostic factor. However, considering young age itself as an independent poor prognostic factor for all breast cancers is unwarranted. We analyzed the different prognostic effects of age as a prognostic factor according to molecular subtype. Methods: We retrieved data from 1,819 patients with primary breast cancer at the breast cancer center between 2007 and 2012. We classified each molecular subtype in 3 age cohorts (<40, 40-50, and >
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the trend of nursing theories by Korean Journal of Adult Nursing (KJAN) for the last five years and to provide future directions for improvement. \n\nMethods: The study analyzed data collected from 323 research papers published in KJAN between 2010~2014. Descriptive analysis was conducted with a focus on frequency and percentage for the quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis was performed for the analysis of nursing theories. \n\nResults: As
Leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor that originates in the smooth muscle, usually in the gastrointestinal tract, the retroperitoneum and the genitourinary tract. The omentum has been rarely reported as a primary site of occurrence with leiomyosarcoma. A 72 year-old woman, with palpable mass on the left upper quadrant of abdomen and weight loss, was admitted to St. Paul's Hospital. Abdominal CT scan showed a 12 x 8 x 8 cm-sized cystic mass in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. Endoscopic ultrason
Dietary intervention to prevent <i>Helicobacter pylori</i> (<i>H. pylori</i>)-gastric cancer might be ideal because of no risk of bacterial resistance, safety, and rejuvenating action of atrophic gastritis. We have published data about the potential of fermented kimchi as nutritional approach for <i>H. pylori</i>. Hence recent advances in RNAseq analysis lead us to investigate the transcriptome analysis to explain these beneficiary actions of kimchi. gastric cells were infected with either <i>H.
Eosinophilic mastitis is a rare disease in which eosinophils infiltrate the ducts and lobules of the breast, causing mammary inflammation. Although eosinophilic mastitis is a benign condition, it presents similarly to and is often mistaken for breast cancer. Here we report the first case of eosinophilic mastitis in Korea. A 43-year-old woman presented with redness and swelling in her right breast. A breast ultrasound revealed ill-defined isoechoic and hyperechoic areas in the upper half and lowe
To evaluate the oral glutamine (GLN) on the luminal microbes and bacterial translocation (BT) in short bowel, 45 Wistar rats were utilized in three groups; A (control), and B and C (short bowel, 85% of small bowel resected). The group A was fed with elemental diet (EmD), B with EmD+2% glycine, and C with EmD+2% GLN. The groups B and C were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Wet weight, DNA, protein, and histomorphometry of the mucosa and parallel microbial culture from cecal contents, caval blood, a
