About the Lab

Professor Seung-kyun Hwang's research lab focuses on translational neuroscience and interventional medicine, with a strong emphasis on cerebrovascular diseases, brain tumors, and chronic disease management. The lab investigates innovative therapeutic strategies such as stem cell-based gene therapy for malignant gliomas, endovascular interventions for intracranial aneurysms, and pharmacological management of acute hypertension in intracerebral hemorrhage. It also explores health system factors influencing long-term outcomes in patients with hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia, highlighting the importance of continuity of care. The lab integrates clinical research with preclinical development to improve patient outcomes in neurological and cardiovascular conditions.

Impact of Continuity of Care on Mortality and Health Care Costs: A Nationwide Cohort Study in Korea
Dong Wook Shin, J. Cho, Han‐Kwang Yang, Jai Hyung Park, Hyun Lee, Hoon Kim, Juhwan Oh, Sung-Kyun Hwang, B. Cho, Eliseo Güallar
SJR Q1The Annals of Family MedicineOA

Lower indices of continuity of care in patients with newly diagnosed hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia were associated with higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, cardiovascular events, and health care costs. Health care systems should be designed to support long-term trusting relationships between patients and physicians.

Therapeutic efficacy and safety of TRAIL-producing human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells against experimental brainstem glioma
Sun Ah Choi, Sung-Kyun Hwang, K.-C. Wang, B.-K. Cho, Ji Hoon Phi, J.Y. Lee, Hee‐Won Jung, Dong Hun Lee, Soo‐Kyung Kim
SJR Q1Neuro-OncologyOA

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have an extensive migratory capacity for gliomas, which is comparable to that of neural stem cells. Among the various types of MSCs, human adipose tissue-derived MSCs (hAT-MSC) emerge as one of the most attractive vehicles for gene therapy because of their high throughput, lack of ethical concerns, and availability and ease of isolation. We evaluated the therapeutic potential and safety of genetically engineered hAT-MSCs encoding the tumor necrosis factor-related ap

Skull baseOA

The authors present guidelines for the ligation of the transverse or sigmoid sinus during the surgical removal of petroclival meningiomas. The medical records and venograms of 14 patients with a petroclival meningioma requiring transverse or sigmoid sinus ligation treated in the Department of Neurosurgery, Seoul National University Hospital between 1986 and 1999 were reviewed. All patients successfully received a sinus trial clamping during the operation. The drainage pattern of the confluens of

SJR Q1American Journal of NeuroradiologyOA

Endovascular treatment of unruptured intracranial aneurysms in patients older than 70 years of age appears to be safe. Favorable outcomes with low morbidities may replace surgery or conservative treatment as an active management alternative.

Sung-Kyun Hwang, Jong-Soo Kim, Jung-Hee Kim, Chang Ki Hong, Kook Hee Yang
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

The authors performed a multicenter prospective study to evaluate the feasibility and safety of intravenous nicardipine hydrochloride for acute hypertension in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). This study included 88 patients (mean age: 58.3 yr, range 26-87 yr) with ICH and acute hypertension in 5 medical centers between August 2008 and November 2010, who were treated using intravenous nicardipine. Administration of nicardipine resulted in a decrease from mean systolic blood pressure

A Case of Dural Arteriovenous Fistula of Superior Sagittal Sinus after Tamoxifen Treatment for Breast Cancer
Sung-Kyun Hwang
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

We are reporting an unusual case of dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) after tamoxifen treatment for breast cancer. A 30-year-old female arrived at the emergency room with a sudden headache and left sided weakness and sensory loss. In her past medical history, she was diagnosed with breast cancer 1 year prior, and subsequently underwent a breast conserving mastectomy with whole breast radiation and adjuvant chemotherapy with tamoxifen. At the time of admission
