About the Lab
Professor Seunghan Chae's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying carcinogenesis and tissue fibrosis, with a particular emphasis on tumor suppressor genes, cell cycle regulators, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer and chronic kidney diseases. The lab investigates biomarkers such as cyclin B1, p53, p16, VEGF-C, D2-40, and mucins to understand their roles in cancer progression and lymph node metastasis. Additionally, the lab explores intestinal permeability and mast cell activity in irritable bowel syndrome, linking immune cell infiltration to epithelial barrier dysfunction. Their work integrates immunohistochemistry, image analysis, and clinical pathology to identify diagnostic and prognostic markers in various malignancies and fibrotic disorders.

15Purpose: The molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the initiation and progression of breast cancers are largely unknown. This study was to analyze the cyclin B1, cdc2, p53 and p16 tumor suppressor genes in human breast cancer. Materials and Methods: To investigate the role of cyclin B1, cdc2, p53 and p16 in the pathogenesis and progression of breast carcinomas, 98 cases of breast cancers were examined by immunohistochemical method. The correlations of cyclin B1, cdc2, p53 and p16 express
Purpose: Recent studies have showed that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a key process of glomerular and tubulointerstitial pathology in many chronic kidney diseases. However, there are no data of EMT in humane autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Patients and Methods: ADPKD kidneys (N=5) with end stage renal disease (ESRD) and control kidneys (N=4) were analyzed immnunohistochemically. We evaluated α-SMA, E-cadherin, vimentin, TGF-β1 and Smad 2/3 expression in ADPKD
VEGF-C and D2-40 were more highly expressed in patients having PTC with LNM than in patients having PTC without LNM or in those having TNH. Analysis of VEGF-C level and LVD using D2-40 may be helpful in the diagnosis of PTC and the evaluation of LNM potential in patients with PTC.
Purpose: Mucins are members of the glycoprotein family expressed in benign and malignant epithelial cells. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationships between the expression of mucins in breast ductal carcinoma and clinicopathologic parameters. Methods: We constructed tumor microarrays based on 240 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma and 40 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) using formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissues. We examined the expressions of MUC1, MUC2, MUC 5AC, and M
Background/Aims Although mucosal mast cell tryptase is known to significantly increase intestinal permeability, the relationship between mucosal mast cells and intestinal permeability remains unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation among intestinal permeability, tryptase activity and mucosal mast cell count. Methods Rectal biopsies from 16 patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) and 7 normal subjects were assessed for tryptase activity and
Pleomorphic dermal sarcoma (PDS) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm sharing histopathological features with atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), but has additional features of deep invasion of the superficial subcutis, tumor necrosis and vascular/ perineural invasion. It is not well documented in the literature because of its rarity, and its clinical course has been debated due to the lack of homogenous criteria. We describe here the case of a 91-year-old female with a 6-month history of a solitary, asympt
The mutation of the PKD1 gene causes autosomal dominant polycystic kidney dis-ease (ADPKD), and the PKD1 gene encodes polycystin-1 (PC-1). PC-1 is thought to be a cell-cell/matrix adhesion receptor molecule at the cell surface that is widely expressed in the kidney. However, there are controversies about the role of PC-1 protein and its expression when using different antibodies to detect it. We used two PC-1 antibodies; C-20 (Santa Cruz, sc-10372) as the C-terminal antibody, and P-15 (Santa Cru
This study was conducted to find out the effects of aqueous extract from the leaves of Artemisia capillaris (AA) on the reduction of hepatotoxicity induced by ethanol in rats. In this experiment, Sprague Dawley rats were used in the experimental groups, which were divided into 5 groups; normal group, ethanol+UDCA (ursodeoxycholic acid)-treated group (positive control), ethanol-treated group (control), ethanol+Artemisia capillaris aqueous extract-treated group (200 mg/kg of BW) and ethanol+Artemi

Exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) is an uncommon condition resulting from aspiration or inhalation of vegetable, animal or mineral oil. It results in foreign body type inflammatory reaction of the lung and can show various clinical presentations from asymptomatic incidental finding to severe pneumonia leading to acute respiratory failure. Although many cases have been reported, severe ELP requiring steroid or whole lung lavage for treatment is rare. We report a case of 51year old man with esophag
Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) occurs occasionally as a paraneoplastic syndrome in some solid tumors, but MAHA accompanied by signet ring cell carcinoma of an unknown origin is very rare. In this study, we present the case of an 80-yr-old man who was admitted to the hospital because of a 1-month history of lower back pain and dyspnea. He was diagnosed with MAHA on the basis of the laboratory findings that revealed anemia with schistocytes, decreased haptoglobin levels, and a negative d
Purpose: In the present study, we evaluated the levels of urokinase- type plasminogen activator (uPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) by performing immunohistochemical staining to determine whether they were reliable prognostic markers in patients with breast cancer. Methods: Demographic and clinicopathological parameters of 214 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and 80 patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) who were diagnosed and treated from 2006 to 2010 were an
To analyze the accuracy and usefulness of sputum cytology as a screening method, 103 cases of histologically proven lung cancer registered from 1998 to 2000 at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital were retrospectively examined. We reviewed the original cytologic and surgical diagnoses for the cases, and the cytology slides of all cytologically negative cases. The overall sensitivity of sputum cytology was 0.83; the sensitivity of prebronchoscopy sputum cytology for bronchogenic carcinoma was 0.87. Central t
Primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis (PLCA) is characterized by extracellular deposi- tion of pathological fibril aggregation of proteins in the skin without systemic involvement. Macular amyloidosis, lichen (papular) amyloidosis, and nodular amyloidosis are three dif- ferent subtypes of PLCA. Although the pathological mechanism of PLCA has not yet been clarified, it is assumed that a nucleus formation of amyloid fibril is formed due to repeated external stimulation, such as subcutaneous inje
