About the Lab
Professor So Young Han's research lab specializes in ophthalmic epidemiology and clinical ophthalmology, focusing on the long-term impact of systemic and lifestyle factors on visual health. The lab investigates the dose–response relationships between modifiable risk factors—such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and cardio-metabolic conditions—and the incidence of visual impairment and ocular diseases. Key research directions include the longitudinal assessment of visual acuity, the pathogenesis and management of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, and innovative treatments for dry eye disease and ocular misalignment. The lab integrates population-based cohort studies with advanced imaging and objective biomarkers to advance preventive and personalized ophthalmic care.

15AIMS: The associations of visual impairment (VI) with cardio-metabolic risk factors have been reported but its association with cardiovascular mortality remains uncertain. Therefore, we evaluated the association of visual acuity (VA) with overall, injury-related, and cardiovascular mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cohort study was performed in 580 746 Korean adults (average age, 39.7 years) who were followed for a median of 8.1 years (maximum, 16 years). Presenting VA was measured by the Early
The longitudinal relationship between smoking status and risk of developing visual impairment (VI) remains unclear. We examined the relationship of smoking status and urinary cotinine level, an objective measure of smoking, with incidence of VI. This cohort study included 279,069 individuals free of VI who were followed for up to 8.8 years (median 4.8 years). VI was defined as when bilateral visual acuity was worse than 0.5 (cutoffs of 0.3 Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution). During 1,
CP patients with exotropia showed successful ocular alignment comparable to that of controls after BLR recession of at least 2 years.
Visual impairment is a global health problem that leads to poor quality of life. The aim of the study was to examine the dose–response relationship between alcohol consumption and incident visual impairment (VI). This longitudinal cohort study consisted of 287,352 Korean adults who attended health screenings between March 2011 and December 2017 and were followed for up to 8.8 years (median, 4.9 years). Participants were categorized based on their average alcohol consumption. VI was defined as bi
To compare the surgical outcomes of medial rectus advancement and lateral rectus recession in postoperative consecutive exotropia with single-stage adjustable suture surgery.Among 1003 patients who underwent bilateral medial rectus recession between November 1996 and March 2013, the patients who required surgery for consecutive exotopia were retrospectively reviewed. Nineteen patients underwent medial rectus advancement and 15 patients underwent lateral rectus recession. All patients underwent s

Intravitreal ranibizumab injection can be considered to be a therapy for the stabilization of subfoveal CNV secondary to AMD with combined severe DR. However, these patients might exhibit limited visual improvement after treatment.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate changes in dry eye disease (DED) parameters and tear film lipid layer distribution after intensive pulse light (IPL) combined with meibomian gland expression (MGX) in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). METHODS: This retrospective study included 218 patients diagnosed with MGD who underwent IPL combined with MGX. Various DED parameters, including tear film lipid layer thickness (LLT), were measured using a Placido disc tear film analyzer and
We evaluated surgical outcomes of bilateral rectus (BLR) recession in patients with intermittent exotropia who underwent diagnostic monocular occlusion. Records of patients with intermittent exotropia who were preoperatively examined one-hour monocular occlusion and underwent BLR recession were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were classified into two groups based on change in exodeviation angle: responders (≥5 change in prism diopters [PD] after occlusion) or non-responders (<5 PD change afte
This study compared the thickness of each intraretinal layer in patients with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) and controls to analyze the association between intraretinal layer thickness and visual function. The macular spectral-domain optical coherence tomography volumetric dataset obtained from 68 eyes (25 adult eyes, 43 pediatric eyes) with NF1 without optic glioma and 143 control eyes (100 adult eyes, 43 pediatric eyes) was used for image auto-segmentation. The intraretinal layers segmented from t
This study was aimed to analyze ocular biometric changes following cycloplegia in pediatric patients with strabismus and amblyopia. Cycloplegia is routinely used to measure refractive error accurately by paralyzing accommodation. However, effects on axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), keratometry (Km), and white-to-white distance (WTW) are not well studied in this population. This retrospective study examined 797 patients (1566 eyes) undergoing cycloplegic refraction at a Samsung Ka
