About the Lab
Professor Soo-hyun Lim's research lab focuses on sustainable bioenergy systems, particularly the development and optimization of perennial energy crops like Miscanthus hybrids for lignocellulosic biomass production in Europe. The lab also investigates plant biotechnology and breeding strategies to improve crop yield and reduce establishment costs. In addition, the lab explores the therapeutic potential of natural compounds, such as rosmarinic acid derivatives, in cancer treatment, and examines herbicide resistance risks in problematic weeds like Echinochloa species. A growing component of the lab’s work involves clinical and epidemiological studies on metabolic and vascular health, including muscle fat infiltration and cardiovascular outcomes in Asian populations.

15Abstract Field trials in Europe with Miscanthus over the past 25 years have demonstrated that interspecies hybrids such as M. × giganteus ( M × g ) combine both high yield potentials and low inputs in a wide range of soils and climates. Miscanthus hybrids are expected to play a major role in the provision of perennial lignocellulosic biomass across much of Europe as part of a lower carbon economy.
