About the Lab

Professor Soo-hyun Moon's research lab focuses on critical analyses of state power, violence, and social transformation, particularly in the contexts of German and Korean political history. The lab explores the interplay between national identity, state violence, and civil liberties, with a strong emphasis on historical narratives, constitutionalism, and the evolution of democratic institutions. Key research directions include the historical development of conscientious objection, the role of political funding in democratic governance, and the ideological underpinnings of state violence and failure. The lab also investigates transnational perspectives on gender, civil society, and political movements, especially in 19th and 20th century Europe and East Asia.

An Analysis of the Debate over Conscientious Objection in Korea
Soo-Hyun Mun
Seoul National University Open Repository (Seoul National University)

Although freedom of conscience, the legal foundation of conscientious objection, was\n\nincorporated into the South Korean Constitution in 1948, conscientious objection in\n\nKorea remained taboo until the late 1990s. The goal of this article is to illustrate how\n\nand why attitudes towards conscientious objection remained virtually unchanged in such\n\na fast-moving society like that of Korea. Freedom of religion and conscience represent\n\nthe central concepts of Western Constitutions and con

German Discourse on Korea during the Era of Japanese Imperialism
Soo-Hyun Mun
SJR Q3Seoul journal of Korean studies

This study examines how Germany, as a leading country in the international community, perceived and narrated the Japanese colonization of Korea from 1905 to 1945. The first part of this article explores the continuities and changes in German stereotypes towards Korea and their impact on Japanese colonial rule. It analyzes whether and how German-Japanese diplomatic relations influenced German attitudes toward Korea. It can be ascertained that there were virtually no changes in the German stereoty

Louise Otto-Peters was widely acknowledged as the mother of the German women’s movement. She was the editor of the “FrauenZeitung”, the first political women’s newspaper in Germany, which was founded in the aftermath of the democratic revolution of 1848/49 and the founder of “Allgemeiner Deutscher Frauenverein”, the first “German” women’s rights association. Germany in the second half of the 19th century was pretty much a conservative society. Hence, her campaigns were under serious surveillance

This article explores the regulation of political funding in Germany and how CDU, the incumbent ruling party, modified its financial structure in accordance with these national regulations. This process was not maneuvered by the political parties, but by the Federal Constitutional Count which repeatedly provided the guide lines to improve the political funding structure. The occasional political scandals such as Kohl Scandal and Flick Scandal provided the impetus to improve the legal framework t

Creating Legitimacy through Media Discourse: German Press Reporting on the Japanese Colonisation of Korea, 1905–1910
Soo-Hyun Mun
SJR Q3Acta KoreanaOA

The annexation treaties between Korea and Japan remain controversial, as does the question of their legality. In contrast to the Koreans, who indicated the treaties were concluded under duress, the Japanese focused on seeking international approval. By analysing the German news reports on the Japanese annexation of Korea published between 1905 and 1945, this article examines whether Germans believed the Japanese colonisation of Korea conformed to international law and custom. This article demons

The German social democratic party (SPD) and the debate on the fertility decline in the German Empire (1870~1918).
Soo-Hyun Mun
PubMed

This paper aimed to examine the debate over the fertility decline in the German Empire, focusing on the role of the SPD. During the German Empire, the fertility rate dramatically declined and the growing awareness of a continuous decline in the birth rate prompted a massive debate among politicians, doctors, sociologists, and feminist activists. The fertility decline was negatively evaluated and generated consciousness of crisis. However, it was not the only way to face this new phenomenon. Inde

A portrait of a Japanese history Professor at Keijo Imperial University, Korea
Soo-Hyun Mun
SJR Q1Interventions

This essay examines the education and research of Kaneko Gosuke, a western history professor at Keijo Imperial University. Western history was both highly emphasized in the preparatory course and suppressed within Keijo University’s history department due to its double identities, one as a mirror in understanding the world and the Japanese Empire and the other as the explosive charge of threatening concepts like nationalism and democracy. Kaneko Gosuke could teach only introductory courses becau

The Efforts to Resolve Housing Problem During the Weimar Republic: the “Wohnungszwangswirtschaft” and “Hauszinssteuer”
Soo-Hyun Mun
The Western History Review

Continuity and Expansion: Trends in German History Research from 2021 to 2022
Soo-Hyun Mun
The Korean Historical Review

In an endeavor to systematically elucidate the characteristics of German historical scholarship spanning the time frame of 2021-2022, this article delineates these intellectual pursuits as bifurcated realms: “continuity” and “expansion”. The demarcation between the two remains blurred, given the underlying premise that “expansion” is often interwoven with, and in some instances predicated upon, the foundational elements of “continuity”. For the sake of analytical expediency, though, this article
