About the Lab
Professor Soo Woong Kim's research lab specializes in urological and sexual health, focusing on the physiological and pathological mechanisms underlying pelvic pain, neurogenic bladder, and erectile dysfunction. The lab investigates hormonal regulation—particularly estrogen and its receptor pathways—alongside neurogenic and metabolic influences on sexual function and urological symptoms. Using both preclinical animal models and clinical studies, the lab explores therapeutic interventions such as percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation and the role of signaling pathways like NO-cGMP in sexual arousal. Their work bridges basic science and clinical application, emphasizing personalized diagnosis and treatment in chronic pelvic and urological conditions.

15Estradiol is crucial for maintaining optimal vaginal blood flow in the rat. Lower levels of plasma estradiol trigger compensatory ERalpha up-regulation.
BACKGROUND: We evaluated the clinical effect of intermittent percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) in patients with chronic pelvic pain (CPP). METHODS: A total of 15 patients (10 women and 5 men, mean age 60.0 years, range 41-78) with CPP were enrolled in an open prospective clinical trial. The patients had 12 weekly outpatient treatment sessions, each lasting 30 min. All patients were evaluated by history, physical as well as urological examination, the Visual Analogue Scale (V
Our data suggest that the rat is a useful and reliable animal model for investigating the vaginal arousal response. In addition, we used this model to demonstrate the important role of the NO-cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway in vaginal arousal.
A significant number of SSAs might not be accurately diagnosed in daily clinical practice without any predilection for size, shape, and location. Therefore, when large HPs are diagnosed in clinical practice, it is necessary for physicians to have greater awareness of the diagnosis of SSA and to individualize subsequent surveillance.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the sexual function and activity in male patients on clean intermittent catheterization with neurogenic bladder due to spinal cord injury. METHODS: Eighty-nine patients (mean age 37.6 years with a range of 18-66) were included in the study. We requested all subjects to complete a questionnaire including the 5-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). RESULTS: Of 89 patients, 60 (67.4%) reported having attempted no sexua
INTRODUCTION: Poor glycemic control is associated with erectile dysfunction (ED); however, differences in ED according to the level of glycemic control have been poorly investigated. AIM: The aim of this paper is to investigate the change in erectile function according to the level of glycemic control and to clarify the pathophysiological mechanism of diabetes-associated ED. METHODS: Streptozotocin was injected into 55 male Sprague-Dawley rats classified into four groups: control (group 1), diab
Maternal digit ratio was negatively associated with offspring sex ratio. Females with a lower digit ratio were more likely to have more male offspring compared to those with a higher digit ratio. Thus, our results suggest that the sex of offspring might be more influenced by maternal rather than paternal factors.
INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) increases with duration of diabetes and phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5I) are not as effective in treatment of diabetes-associated ED. However, few studies have investigated time-dependent change in erectile function during the course of diabetes. AIM: To investigate time-dependent change in erectile function and responsiveness to PDE5I in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and to understand the pathophysiolog
Purpose: A questionnaire is a mandatory screening tool for the deduction of an androgen deficiency in aging males(ADAM). The aim of this study was to translate the ADAM questionnaire into Korean and validate it linguistically. Materials and Methods: Two native Korean speakers, who were also fluent in English, independently translated the original English version of the ADAM questionnaire into written Korean. A panel, consisting of the aforementioned translators and four urologists, reviewed the
UNLABELLED: Study Type--Prognosis (cohort) Level of Evidence 2b. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? The second to fourth digit ratio (hereafter the digit ratio) of the right hand is related to the activity of the androgen receptor. Five α-reductase inhibitor (5ARI) reduces the prostate volume of patients with BPH. In terms of prostate volume reduction, large-scale placebo-controlled studies show that patients with BPH do not always respond well to 5ARI treatment. Patients
The aim of the study was to determine whether the pregnancy rate with the same female partner or younger partners was higher compared with different or older partners after undergoing repeated vasectomy reversal. A total of 44 patients were enrolled in the present study. The cause of reversal in patients with the same partner was the desire to have more children in 14 cases, the loss of a child in 7 cases, and the desire for a son in 7 cases. Patients were asked about pregnancy and childbirth du
