About the Lab

Professor SoYeong Lee's research lab focuses on the pathophysiology of acute and chronic kidney diseases, with a particular emphasis on the molecular mechanisms underlying acute kidney injury (AKI), diabetic tubulopathy, and the transition from acute to chronic kidney disease. The lab investigates key processes such as apoptosis, microvascular rarefaction, mitochondrial dynamics, and extracellular matrix remodeling, often integrating in vitro and in vivo models to explore therapeutic targets. A central theme is the role of cellular stress responses and metabolic dysregulation in kidney injury and repair, with translational applications in diabetic nephropathy and proteinuric kidney diseases. Pathogenesis of septic acute kidney injury is thought to be different from that of ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury. Our data showed a link between apoptosis, immune suppression, and the development of acute kidney injury during sepsis and suggest that strategies targeting apoptosis or enhancing immunity might be a potential therapeutic strategy for septic acute kidney injury.
