About the Lab

Professor Subin Lee's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary biomedical and materials science research, spanning regenerative medicine, spinal surgery innovation, and functional food development. The lab investigates the biological and clinical implications of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, including psychiatric comorbidities and advanced spinal implant technologies such as expandable interbody cages. It also explores bioactive compounds in natural products—like cinnamon powder in baked goods—for health-promoting effects, while conducting fundamental studies on fungal glycobiology and graphene-based thermal energy conversion. The lab integrates clinical data, molecular biology, and materials engineering to develop novel therapeutic and functional solutions.

SJR Q1Clinical Orthopaedics and Related ResearchOA

BACKGROUND: Children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have reduced quality of life related to poor self-image, perhaps because of cosmetic concerns. However, there has not been a large-database epidemiologic study on the association between psychiatric disorders and scoliosis. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Using the Korean National Health Insurance database, we asked: (1) How common are psychiatric disorders among children with AIS? (2) After controlling for gender, age, insurance type, and resi

Efficient heat generation in large-area graphene films by electromagnetic wave absorption

SJR Q12D Materials

Graphene has been intensively studied due to its outstanding electrical and thermal properties. Recently, it was found that the heat generation by Joule heating of graphene is limited by the conductivity of graphene. Here we suggest an alternative method to generate heat on a large-area graphene film more efficiently by utilizing the unique electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption property of graphene. The EM wave induces an oscillating magnetic moment generated by the orbital motion of moving elect

Lumbar fusion surgery for treating degenerative spinal diseases has undergone significant advancements in recent years. In addition to posterior instrumentation, anterior interbody fusion techniques have been developed along with various cages for interbody fusion. Recently, expandable cages capable of altering height, lordotic angle, and footprint within the disc space have garnered significant attention. In this manuscript, we review the current status, clinical outcomes, and future prospects

Effects of altered N-glycan structures of Cryptococcus neoformans mannoproteins, MP98 (Cda2) and MP84 (Cda3), on interaction with host cells
Su‐Bin Lee, Catia Mota, Eun Jung Thak, Jungho Kim, Ye Ji Son, Doo‐Byoung Oh, Hyun Ah Kang
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen causing lethal meningoencephalitis. It has several cell wall mannoproteins (MPs) identified as immunoreactive antigens. To investigate the structure and function of N-glycans assembled on cryptococcal cell wall MPs in host cell interactions, we purified MP98 (Cda2) and MP84 (Cda3) expressed in wild-type (WT) and N-glycosylation-defective alg3 mutant (alg3Δ) strains. HPLC and MALDI-TOF analysis of the MP proteins from the WT reveal

SJR Q2Applied SciencesOA

Background: There are a few biomechanical studies that describe posterior fixation methods with pedicle screws (PS) and lateral mass screws (LMS); the combination of both screw types and their effect on an allograft spacer in a surgically treated cervical segment is unknown. Methods: Finite element model (FEM) analyses were used to investigate the effects of a hybrid technique using posterior PS and LMS. Stress distribution and subsidence risk from a combination of screws under hybrid motion con

The purpose of our study is to compare the maternal and neonatal outcomes of induction of labor (IOL) versus expectant management at 39 weeks of gestation. We conducted a single-centered, prospective, observational study of nulliparous singleton women at 39 weeks or more. We compared the maternal and perinatal outcomes. Of 408 nulliparous women, 132 women were IOL group and 276 women were expectant management group. IOL and expectant group had similar cesarean delivery rate (18.2% vs. 15.9%, p =

A Rapid, Reliable RP-UPLC Method for Large-Scale Analysis of Wheat HMW-GS Alleles
Su‐Bin Lee, Yu-Jeong Yang, Sun‐Hyung Lim, Yong Gu, Jong-Yeol Lee
SJR Q1MoleculesOA

High-molecular-weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) account for only 10% of total wheat storage proteins, but play an important role in the processing quality of wheat flour. Therefore, identifying HMW-GS alleles associated with good end-use quality provides important information for wheat breeders. To rapidly, accurately and reproducibly identify HMW-GS, we established an optimized reversed-phase ultra-performance liquid chromatography (RP-UPLC) method. Separation parameters were optimized using a
