About the Lab
Professor Suk-Ho Kang's research lab specializes in advancing minimally invasive urological surgery, with a strong focus on robotic-assisted laparoscopic techniques such as robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) and radical prostatectomy. The lab investigates surgical innovation, perioperative outcomes, and the optimization of intracorporeal urinary diversion to improve patient recovery and oncological outcomes. Additionally, the lab pioneers point-of-care diagnostics, particularly label-free, real-time detection of urinary microRNAs using novel nanomaterial-based biosensors for noninvasive disease monitoring.

15PURPOSE: To report our surgical technique and initial experience with robot-assisted laparoscopic radical cystectomy (RARC) with total intracorporeal urinary diversion compared with an extracorporeal method. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In total, 42 patients underwent RARC by a single surgeon at our institute for clinically localized bladder cancer. Among these, 4 patients underwent RARC with complete intracorporeal urinary diversion. An ileal conduit was achieved in 3 patients, and an orthotopic neobl
Urinary miRNAs are biomarkers that demonstrate considerable promise for the noninvasive diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. However, because of background noise resulting from complex physiological features of urine, instability of miRNAs, and their low concentration, accurate monitoring of miRNAs in urine is challenging. To address these limitations, we developed a urine-based disposable and switchable electrical sensor that enables reliable and direct identification of miRNAs in patient urine
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the perioperative outcomes of patients who underwent single-port (SP) robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) (SP-RARP) with those who underwent multiport (MP) RARP (MP-RARP). Methods: Data on 40 consecutive patients who underwent SP-RARP between June 2020 and February 2021 and 129 who underwent MP-RARP between June 2019 and February 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Using logistic regression, 31 patients who underwent SP-RARP were matched to 3
BACKGROUND: To compare the superiority of teaching methods for acquiring a proficient level of surgical skill in a robotic surgery-naïve individual using a robotic virtual reality simulator. METHODS: This study employed a prospective, randomized study design to assess student's learning curve. We divided 45 subjects into 3 groups: those with expert proctoring (group I), those who watched only an educational video (group II), and those with independent training (group III; n = 15 per group). The
Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effect of intraoperative fluid volume on the postoperative ileus (POI) recovery period. A retrospective review of the Korean robot-assisted radical cystectomy database identified 718 patients who underwent robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC). Regression analyses were performed to identify the associations between the amount of intraoperative fluid administration (crystalloid/colloid/total), POI period (time to flatus/bowel movements), and length
RARC seems to be associated with equivalent complication rates, a smaller amount of estimated blood loss, lower transfusion rate, shorter length of hospital stay, shorter time to flatus, and more lymph node yield. Randomized controlled trials with a large sample size and comparative studies with long-term follow-up data are warranted to assess our findings and the oncologic effectiveness of RARC.
This study aimed to compare the diagnostic validity of biparametric magnetic resonance imaging (bpMRI) with that of multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) based on the Vesicle Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) in predicting muscle invasion by bladder cancer (BCa). We retrospectively examined 357 patients with an initial diagnosis of BCa who underwent preoperative MRI; 257 and 100 patients underwent mpMRI and bpMRI, respectively. Two urogenital radiologists evaluated all bpMRI and mpMRI scans usin
BACKGROUND: The survival benefits of adrenalectomy (ADx) in the setting of metastatic cancer and prognostic factors for recurrence-free (RFS) and overall survival (OS) after adrenalectomy for metastatic carcinoma are still under debate. We evaluated the impact of clinicopathological variables on RFS and OS after ADx for metastatic carcinoma in patients with primary cancer. METHODS: A total of 32 patients undergoing ADx for metastatic cancer between 2004 and 2012 at two tertiary medical centers.
Rate of complete PC in RCC is relatively low in this study. The risk factors for pseudocapsular invasion were a histologic diameter greater than 4cm, non-clear cell histology, and an incomplete PC. Surgeons must prepare for the possibility of a positive surgical margin if a tumor has at least one of these risk factors.
Background: With the implementation of da Vinci SP robot platform (Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA), we described our initial experience with the da Vinci SP robot platform (Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA) for single-port robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (SP-RARP). Methods: This retrospective review included 30 consecutive patients with prostate biopsy-confirmed prostate cancer who underwent SP-RARP by a single surgeon between June and November 2020. SP-RARP was
• A catapult DNA probe was developed for sensitive detection of miRNA while preventing non-specific adsorption. • Target-specific catapult actuation induces conformal change within Debye length, effectively changing the surface potential. • The FET biosensor enabled stable detection in undiluted urine, maintaining a sensitivity of 10 fM. • Direct measurement of miRNA from urine discriminated bladder cancer within 20 min. Urinary miRNA detection is a non-invasive, simple, and user-friendly diagno
