About the Lab

Professor Suk Jin Kim's research lab specializes in hematological malignancies, with a primary focus on lymphomas such as extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The lab investigates novel therapeutic strategies, including concurrent chemoradiotherapy, targeted chemotherapy regimens like VIPD, and immunotherapies such as anti-PD-L1 agents (e.g., avelumab), aiming to improve survival and quality of life. It also explores molecular mechanisms, including the role of protein kinase CK2 in AML pathogenesis, to identify prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets. The research integrates clinical oncology with molecular biology and translational medicine to advance personalized treatment approaches.

PURPOSE: On the basis of the benefits of frontline radiation in early-stage, extranodal, natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL), we conducted a phase II trial of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) followed by three cycles of etoposide, ifosfamide, cisplatin, and dexamethasone (VIPD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with newly diagnosed, stages IE to IIE, nasal ENKTL received CCRT (ie radiation 40 to 52.8 Gy and cisplatin 30 mg/m(2) weekly). Three cycles of VIPD (etoposide 100 mg/m(2)

INTRODUCTION: Protein kinase CK2 is implicated in cellular proliferation and transformation. However, the clinical and biological significances of CK2 have not been elucidated in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We evaluated the biological significances of catalytic subunit of CK2 (CK2alpha) expression in leukemia cell lines and primary leukemic blasts obtained from AML patients. RESULTS: In this study, the expression of CK2alpha was elevated in a substantial proportion of AML.

The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to analyze the impact of surgery on the outcomes and qualities of life (QOL) in patients with intestinal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We assessed 345 patients with either localized or disseminated intestinal DLBCL and compared them according to treatment: surgical resection followed by chemotherapy versus chemotherapy alone. In patients with localized disease (Lugano stage I/II), surgery plus chemotherapy yielded a lower relapse rate (15.3

The survival of patients with ileocecal region involvement was better than that of patients with involvement at other sites, which might be related to histologic distribution, the proportion of tumor stage, and need for surgical resection.

This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of treatment with avelumab, an anti-programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) antibody, in patients with relapsed or refractory extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL). In this phase 2 trial, 21 patients with relapsed or refractory ENKTL were treated with 10 mg/kg of avelumab on days 1 and 15 of a 28-day cycle. The primary end point was the complete response (CR) rate based on the best response. Targeted sequencing and immunohistochemistry wer

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to identify prognostic factors for survival in patients with primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the adrenal gland. METHODS: Thirty one patients diagnosed with primary adrenal DLBCL from 14 Korean institutions and treated with R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone) were analyzed. RESULTS: Complete remission (CR) and overall response rate after R-CHOP chemotherapy were 54.8% and 87.0%. The 2-year estim

PURPOSE: Tumor hypoxia is associated with poor prognosis and increased tumor aggressiveness. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) IX, an endogenous marker for tumor hypoxia, catalyzes the hydration of carbon dioxide into carbonic acid and contributes to the pH regulation of tumor cells. Therefore, CA IX might allow tumors to acclimate to a hypoxic microenvironment, promoting tumor cell proliferation. We hypothesized that CA IX expression is related to tumor cell proliferation and poor disease-free survival i

BACKGROUND: The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is one of the most common extranasal sites in extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL). However, data regarding ENKTL involving the GI tract are relatively scarce. Thus, we performed a multicenter, multinational retrospective study to analyze clinical features and treatment outcomes of ENKTL involving the GI tract. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with ENKTL involving the GI tract diagnosed in twelve participating centers between 1991 and 2012 were retrospe
