About the Lab

Professor Sukyeong Kim's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in the context of diabetes and endocrine disorders. The lab investigates the pathophysiological links between insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and subclinical atherosclerosis, particularly using carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT) as a surrogate marker. It also explores innovative therapeutic strategies, such as using genetically engineered mesenchymal stem cells for brain tumor therapy, and examines the clinical implications of subclinical thyroid dysfunction on vascular health. The research integrates clinical epidemiology, metabolic phenotyping, and advanced imaging techniques to identify early markers and interventions for cardiovascular risk in diabetic and endocrine populations.

Therapeutic efficacy and safety of TRAIL-producing human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells against experimental brainstem glioma

SJR Q1Neuro-OncologyOA

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have an extensive migratory capacity for gliomas, which is comparable to that of neural stem cells. Among the various types of MSCs, human adipose tissue-derived MSCs (hAT-MSC) emerge as one of the most attractive vehicles for gene therapy because of their high throughput, lack of ethical concerns, and availability and ease of isolation. We evaluated the therapeutic potential and safety of genetically engineered hAT-MSCs encoding the tumor necrosis factor-related ap

Regression of the Increased Common Carotid Artery-intima Media Thickness in Subclinical Hypothyroidism after Thyroid Hormone Replacement

SJR Q2Endocrine JournalOA

The association between subclinical hypothyroidism and cardiovascular disease and the beneficial effect of levothyroxine replacement in subclinical hypothyroidism are still under debate. The present study was designed to determine whether subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with an increase in the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery (C-IMT) and whether thyroid hormone replacement can reverse this change in the C-IMT. Patients with newly-diagnosed subclinical (n=36) and overt

SJR Q1The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & MetabolismOA

CONTEXT: The association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes is controversial. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate the participation of insulin resistance in the association of NAFLD and the carotid atherosclerotic burden in a large cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: This was an observational study performed in 4437 consecutively enrolled patients with type 2 diabetes. MAIN O

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether waist circumference (WC), calf circumference (CC), and waist-to-calf ratio (WCR) are associated with carotid atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was an observational study performed in 3,694 Korean patients with type 2 diabetes. Anthropometric measures and carotid ultrasound were performed on each subject. Carotid atherosclerosis was defined as having a clearly isolated focal plaque or mean carotid intima-media thi

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: We aimed to determine the hospital-based prevalence and clinical features of fulminant type 1 diabetes mellitus in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified all patients with diabetes who regularly visited the Endocrinology outpatient clinics at eight centers for a period >1 year between January 2012 and June 2017. We investigated their medical records retrospectively. RESULTS: During this period, 76,309 patients with diabetes had been regularly followed up. Among them, 913

Leptin has been linked to adiposity, insulin resistance, and coronary artery disease (CAD). We examined whether the leptin concentrations are associated with the risk of CAD and metabolic syndrome (MS). The plasma leptin concentrations were measured in 556 diabetic patients (341 men and 215 women). The odds ratio (OR) of CAD and MS were increased on moving from the lowest quartile (Q1) of leptin concentration to the highest quartile (Q4) and remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, BMI

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a major problem throughout the world and getting worse because of population increase and aging. The cost of treatment increases as the population of people with CLBP increases. This study aimed to examine the effect of auricular acupressure (AA) on pain and disability in elders with chronic low back pain. The randomized, single-blinded, and placebo-controlled study was conducted on 51 elders with CLBP in South Korea from June 2019 to August 2019. The experimental

This study aims to analyse girl’s textbooks which had been used in schools during the period from 1896~1910. The urgent demand of that period was the development of national power and children’s education for nation’s future against Japanese invasion. At that time, women’s education were focused on producing wise mother and good wives in the modern sense in order to raise their children. The newspapers and magazines in that period claimed that women, as the civilized citizen, had to be educated
