About the Lab

Professor Sun-Hwa Lee's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research, integrating molecular biology, medical imaging, and clinical epidemiology to investigate the interplay between microbiota, metabolic disorders, and chronic diseases. Key research directions include understanding the role of early-life microbial colonization in allergic sensitization, evaluating advanced imaging techniques for musculoskeletal disorders, and assessing the predictive value of non-invasive imaging biomarkers for cardiovascular and liver diseases. The lab also explores neurodegenerative mechanisms, particularly in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with a focus on systemic manifestations such as liver involvement. These multidisciplinary efforts aim to improve early diagnosis, risk prediction, and mechanistic understanding of complex human diseases.

Cloning and Characterization of a Multidomain GH10 Xylanase from Paenibacillus sp. DG-22
Sun Hwa Lee, Yong-Eok Lee
SJR Q2Journal of Microbiology and BiotechnologyOA

The xynC gene, which encodes high molecular weight xylanase from Paenibacillus sp. DG-22, was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli, and its nucleotide sequence was determined. The xynC gene comprised a 4,419 bp open reading frame encoding 1,472 amino acid residues, including a 27 amino acid signal sequence. Sequence analysis indicated that XynC is a multidomain enzyme composed of two family 4_9 carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs), a catalytic domain of family 10 glycosyl hydrolases, a family
