About the Lab
Professor Sun Young Kim's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on aging, metabolic health, and reproductive immunology. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of nephrotoxicity and sarcopenia, particularly in elderly populations, to identify biomarkers and risk thresholds for conditions like osteoporosis and frailty. It also explores epigenetic regulation—especially DNA methylation—in maternal-fetal immune interactions during pregnancy, and examines the therapeutic potential of natural compounds, such as herbal supplements, in managing menopausal symptoms and cardiovascular risk. The lab integrates clinical epidemiology with molecular mechanisms to develop preventive and personalized health strategies.

15The optimal cut-off values of CC for low MM are 35 cm for males and 33 cm for females. Lower CC based on these cut-off values is related with poor physical function. CC may be also a good indicator of sarcopenia in Korean elderly.
The purpose of this study was to predict osteoporosis risk as decreasing muscle mass and to declare the cut-off value of low muscle mass in an elderly Korean population. This study was based on data from the 2008-2010 Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Surveys (KNHANES). The subjects included 1,308 men and 1,171 women over 65 yr. Bone mineral density (BMD) and appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM) were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and appendicular skeletal musc
Choose your catalyst wisely: Depending on the position of the cyclopropyl substituent on the bicyclo[4.1.0]hept-2-ene substrate, a different rhodium complex was used to catalyze the title reaction, which leads to bicyclic dienones in reasonable to excellent yields (see scheme). The products contain a highly substituted seven-membered ring with useful functionality for further manipulation. R1=H, Me; R2=H, Me, Ph; R3=Me, Et; X=NR, O.
Cinnamomum cassia is a well-known traditional medicine for improvement of blood circulation. An extract of this plant showed both platelet anti-aggregation and blood anti-coagulation effects in preliminary testing. Among the 13 compounds obtained from this plant, eugenol (2), amygdalactone (4), cinnamic alcohol (5), 2-hydroxycinnamaldehyde (7), 2-methoxycinnamaldehyde (8), and coniferaldehyde (9) showed 1.5-73-fold greater inhibitory effects than acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on arachidonic acid (A
Enyne-enyne-o: Tandem cycloisomerization of dienynes catalyzed by platinum dichloride and subsequent Cope rearrangement affords bicyclic rings (see scheme; Z=NTs, O, CH2), such as bicyclo[3.2.2]nonadienes 1 or tetrahydrocyclohepta[c]pyrans and -pyridines 2, in high yields.
Rapid, spatially compatible, localized thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer after the first detected DH was shown by Stratus OCT.
Recently, there has been emerging interest in various natural products with skin protective effects as they are recognized as safe and efficient. Microalgae have developed chemical defense systems to protect themselves against oxidative stress caused by UV radiation by producing various bioactive compounds including a number of secondary metabolites, which have potential for cosmeceutical applications. In addition, microalgae have various advantages as a sustainable source for bioactive compound
