SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

The use of gamification in healthcare has been gaining popularity. This prospective, randomized, clinical trial was designed to evaluate whether gamification of the preoperative process—via virtual reality (VR) gaming that provides a vivid, immersive and realistic experience—could reduce preoperative anxiety in children. Seventy children scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia were randomly divided into either the control or gamification group. Children in the control group recei

SJR Q2Pediatric Anesthesia

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: An immersive virtual reality tour of the operating theater could reduce preoperative anxiety. This study was designed to determine whether a preoperative immersive virtual reality tour demonstrates a reduction in emergence delirium through reducing the preoperative anxiety in children undergoing general anesthesia. METHODS: Eighty-six children were randomly allocated into either the control or virtual reality group. The control group received conventional education regarding

The Effect of Virtual Reality on Preoperative Anxiety: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Chang‐Hoon Koo, Jin‐Woo Park, Jung‐Hee Ryu, Sung‐Hee Han
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Virtual reality (VR), a technology that provides a stimulated sensory experience, has recently been implemented in various fields of medicine. Several studies have investigated the efficacy of VR on preoperative anxiety. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to validate whether VR could relieve preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing surgery. Electronic databases were searched to identify all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effect of VR on preoperative anxiety. The prim

The PLMA showed significantly lower oropharyngeal leak pressures than did the LTS or CobraPLA in the neck extension and rotation positions. Caution is warranted when changing the position of the head and neck when using the Cobra-PLA or LTS as gastric insufflation or ventilatory difficulty may occur.

Simvastatin protects ischemic spinal cord injury from cell death and cytotoxicity through decreasing oxidative stress: in vitro primary cultured rat spinal cord model under oxygen and glucose deprivation-reoxygenation conditions

SJR Q1Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and ResearchOA

BACKGROUND: Ischemia and the following reperfusion damage are critical mechanisms of spinal cord injury. Statins have been reported to decrease ischemia-reperfusion injury in many organs including the spinal cord. Anti-oxidative effect is one of the main protective mechanisms of statin against neuronal death and cytotoxicity. We hypothesized that statins' anti-oxidative property would yield neuroprotective effects on spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury METHODS: Primary cultured spinal cord m

Tracheal shortening during laparoscopic gynecologic surgery
J.‐H. Kim, Deok Man Hong, Ah‐Young Oh, Sung‐Hee Han
SJR Q2Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica

BACKGROUND: During laparoscopic gynecologic surgery, pneumoperitoneum combined with the Trendelenburg position moves the carina towards the tip of the endotracheal tube (ETT), decreasing the margin of safety for the ETT position and increasing accidental endobronchial intubation. However, it remains to be established whether the tracheal length itself is actually changed. We conducted a prospective observational study to measure the change in the length of the trachea and the distance between th

The effect of the jaw‐thrust manoeuvre on the ability to advance a tracheal tube over a bronchoscope during oral fibreoptic intubation

SJR Q1Anaesthesia

During fibreoptic intubation, it is often difficult to advance a tracheal tube over the fibreoptic bronchoscope. We performed a prospective randomised study to investigate the effect of the jaw-thrust manoeuvre on the ability to advance a tracheal tube during oral fibreoptic intubation. After placing the bronchoscope in the trachea, an assistant randomly applied a jaw-thrust manoeuvre (jaw-thrust group) or sham manoeuvre (control group) in 82 patients during tube advancement. The jaw-thrust grou

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Neurotoxic effects of local anesthetics (LAs) on developing motor neurons have not been documented. We investigated the neurotoxic effects of LAs on developing motor neurons in terms of cell viability, cytotoxicity, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and apoptosis. Embryonic spinal cord motor neurons were isolated from Sprague-Dawley rat fetuses and exposed to one of the three LAs-lidocaine, bupivacaine, or ropivacaine-at concentrations of 1, 10, 100, or 1000 µM. The exposure duration was set to 1 o

Midazolam Premedication Facilitates Mask Ventilation During Induction of General Anesthesia: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Jin‐Woo Park, Byung Hun Min, Seong-Joo Park, Bo Young Kim, Sung Il Bae, Sung‐Hee Han, Jung‐Won Hwang, Jin Hee Kim
SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

BACKGROUND: During induction of general anesthesia, proper mask ventilation is crucial for supplying sufficient oxygen to unconscious patients. Midazolam has a relaxing effect on airway muscles. We hypothesized that sedative premedication with midazolam would facilitate mask ventilation during anesthetic induction. METHODS: Patients undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia were randomized into 2 groups. The midazolam group received midazolam premedication at the reception area, 3 min
