Patterns of hearing loss after microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm

In this large study, permanent hearing loss occurred in 16 patients (2.2%). Patients with a mild hearing loss with a good SDS (cochlear type) demonstrated much better prognosis than those with poor SDS (retrocochlear type) or total deafness. In addition, total deafness after surgery had no chance of recovery to preoperative hearing capacity.

The pathology of the organ of Corti followed the pattern of neuroepithelial defects. Hair cells in organs of Corti had degenerated in circling mice at 10 days old, in a time-dependent manner. Synaptic transmission between the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) and the lateral superior olive (LSO) was investigated in circling mice, an animal model for inherited deafness, using the voltage-clamp technique.
