About the Lab

Professor Sung Min Lee's research lab specializes in medical image analysis and computational imaging, with a strong focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and image quality in computed tomography (CT) and 3D medical imaging. The lab develops advanced algorithms—particularly leveraging deep learning and physics-based modeling—for reducing artifacts in CT scans, such as beam-hardening and metal-related artifacts, while also advancing automated 3D cephalometric analysis for clinical applications. Another key research direction involves optimizing network coding techniques for high-performance data transmission in medical and communication systems. The lab integrates computational methods with clinical needs to enhance surgical planning, disease diagnosis, and medical image reconstruction.

SJR Q1Physics in Medicine and BiologyOA

This paper presents a new approach to automatic three-dimensional (3D) cephalometric annotation for diagnosis, surgical planning, and treatment evaluation. There has long been considerable demand for automated cephalometric landmarking, since manual landmarking requires considerable time and experience as well as objectivity and scrupulous error avoidance. Due to the inherent limitation of two-dimensional (2D) cephalometry and the 3D nature of surgical simulation, there is a trend away from curr

Accelerated Network Coding with Dynamic Stream Decomposition on Graphics Processing Unit
Sung Min Lee, Wonwoo Ro
SJR Q2The Computer Journal

Network coding, a well-known technique for optimizing data-flow in wired and wireless network systems, has attracted considerable attention in various fields. However, the decoding complexity in network coding becomes a major performance bottleneck in the practical network systems; thus, several researches have been conducted for improving the decoding performance in network coding. Nevertheless, previously proposed parallel network coding algorithms have shown limited scalability and performanc

A Direct Sinogram Correction Method to Reduce Metal-Related Beam-Hardening in Computed Tomography
Sung Min Lee, Taigyntuya Bayaraa, Hosan Jeong, Chang Min Hyun, Jin Keun Seo
SJR Q1IEEE AccessOA

This paper proposes a direct sinogram correction method that does not require metal segmentation and prior knowledge to reduce metal-related artifacts in polychromatic computerized tomography (CT). The metal-related artifacts, being common in dental conebeam CT images, are caused by beam hardening-induced sinogram inconsistency associated with complicated metal-bone-tissue interactions and other factors including scattering. This paper carefully analyzed artifact-causing factors and developed a

Technical Note: A model‐based sinogram correction for beam hardening artifact reduction in CT
Sung Min Lee, Jin Keun Seo, Yong Eun Chung, Jongduk Baek, Hyoung Suk Park
SJR Q1Medical PhysicsOA

PURPOSE: This study aims to propose a physics-based method of reducing beam-hardening artifacts induced by high-attenuation materials such as metal stents or other metallic implants. METHODS: The proposed approach consists of deriving a sinogram inconsistency formula representing the energy dependence of the attenuation coefficient of high-attenuation materials. This inconsistency formula more accurately represents the inconsistencies of the sinogram than that of a previously reported formula (c

The Efficacy of the Alvarado Score in the Diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis
Sung Min Lee, In Taik Chang, Beom Gyu Kim, Sung Jae Cha, Yong Seok Kim, Jun Seok Pak
Journal of the Korean Society of Coloproctology

Purpose: Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of an acute abdomen that needs an emergency operation. However, the preoperative diagnosis is difficult. The purpose of this study is to assess the diagnostic efficacy of the Alvarado score by a comparison with CT and to determine the indication of CT evaluation. Methods: From August 2006 to October 2006, 111 consecutive patients were admitted to Chung-Ang University hospital under the impression of acute appendicitis, and a CT scan was done.

SJR Q1Nano-Micro LettersOA

Abstract While unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs) are promising for renewable energy storage, their efficient operation requires simultaneous water management and gas transport, which is challenging from the standpoint of water management. Herein, a novel approach is introduced for examining the alignment hydrophilic pattern of a Ti porous transport layer (PTL) with the flow field of a bipolar plate (BP). UV/ozone patterning and is employed to impart amphiphilic characteristics to the hydr

Background: Polymeric micelles attract great attention in drug delivery and therapeutics. Various types of block copolymers have been designed for the application in biomedical fields. If we can introduce additional functional groups to the block copolymers, we can achieve advanced applications. In this regards, we tried to introduce aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIE) unit in the block copolymer. Methods: The formation of polyion complex micelle was confirmed by dynamic light scatter

The Messianic Prophecy of Psalm 110:1 and Testimony of John the Apostle about “In the Beginning was the Word”
Sung Min Lee
Theology and the World
