About the Lab

Professor Sung Reul Kim's research lab focuses on environmental and occupational health, with a strong emphasis on human exposure to environmental pollutants and their health impacts. The lab investigates the presence and analysis of toxic compounds—such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—in human biological matrices like human milk, aiming to assess risks to mothers and infants. Additionally, the lab explores psychosocial factors in healthcare workers, particularly nurses, examining how personality traits, resilience, and compassion-related constructs influence job stress, burnout, and well-being. The research integrates analytical chemistry, environmental toxicology, and public health psychology to address both environmental exposures and mental health in clinical populations.

Surface modification of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) film by chemical etching, plasma, and ion beam treatments
Sung Reul Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Chemical etching, plasma, and ion beam treatments were used to modify the surface of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Each surface treatment method developed different surface characteristics. In addition to morphological observation, contact angle, atomic chemical composition, and adhesion strength were measured after treatment with various methods. The different adhesion strengths were explained based on the morphology and atomic chemical composition of the treated PTFE surfaces. The chemical e

No effect of recumbency duration on the occurrence of post-lumbar puncture headache with a 22G cutting needle
Sung Reul Kim, Hyun Seok Chae, Mi Jeong Yoon, Jung Hee Han, Kwang J. Cho, Sun Ju Chung
SJR Q2BMC NeurologyOA

BACKGROUND: Supine recumbence has been widely performed to prevent post-lumbar puncture headache (PLPH). However, the optimal duration of supine recumbence is controversial. The aim of the study is to compare the occurrence of PLPH according to the duration of supine recumbence in patients with neurological disorders. METHODS: A non-equivalent control/experimental pre-/post-test study design was used. Seventy consecutive patients were prospectively enrolled between July 2007 and July 2008. Thirt

SJR Q1Journal of Advanced Nursing

AIMS: To test a hypothetical path model evaluating the influence of type D personality on job stress and job satisfaction and to identify the mediating effects of compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction among clinical nurses in South Korea. BACKGROUND: Personalities susceptible to stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout in clinical nurses have negative effects on the job stress and job satisfaction. DESIGN: A correlational, cross-sectional design was used. METHODS: A convenience

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Human Milk of Nonsmoking U.S. Women
Sung Reul Kim, Rolf U. Halden, Timothy J. Buckley
SJR Q1Environmental Science & Technology

The determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in human milk is relevant in assessing the dose to mothers and infants. Since measurements for the United States are lacking, we analyzed 13 PAHs in human milk from 12 nonsmoking American mothers. Analytes were extracted from milk by using a combination of centrifugation, liquid-liquid, and solid-phase extraction techniques. Following method validation with spiked bovine milk, PAH concentrations in human milk were determined by isotope

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical Nursing

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To test a hypothetical path model estimating the influence of resilience and gratitude disposition on well-being in Korean clinical nurses and to verify the mediating effects of burnout, compassion satisfaction and job satisfaction using a multi-mediation model. BACKGROUND: To improve the well-being of nurses, it is necessary to consider their personal and work-related characteristics comprehensively. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. METHODS: A total of

Volatile Organic Compounds in Human Milk: Methods and Measurements
Sung Reul Kim, Rolf U. Halden, Timothy J. Buckley
SJR Q1Environmental Science & Technology

The present study was conducted to optimize methods for measurement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by use of headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and to provide a preliminary assessment of levels in human milk. MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether), chloroform, benzene, and toluene were measured from two sources of milk: a North Carolina milk bank (n = 5) and multiple samples from three women within nonsmoking households in inner-city Baltimore, MD (n = 8). In Baltimore, indoor air VOC

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a fall risk perception questionnaire for patients admitted to acute care hospitals and to establish its reliability and validity. BACKGROUND: To prevent falls during patients' hospitalisation, it is essential for them to accurately perceive their risk of falling. DESIGN: This methodological study was performed to develop a fall risk perception questionnaire. METHODS: After generating a preliminary questionnaire, two rounds of content validity test
