About the Lab

Professor Sung-soo Lim's research lab specializes in agricultural and applied economics, with a strong focus on consumer behavior, food policy, and international trade. The lab investigates critical issues such as consumer willingness to pay for traceable and novel food products, including gene-edited and imported beef, as well as the economic impacts of international regulatory frameworks like the EU’s carding system for fisheries and tariff-rate quotas in WTO negotiations. Research also extends to health economics, particularly the labor market implications of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. The lab employs advanced econometric methods, including conjoint analysis and instrumental variable estimation, to inform policy and market strategies.

Valuing traceability of imported beef in Korea: an experimental auction approach*
Ji Yong Lee, Doo Bong Han, Rodolfo M. Nayga, Song Soo Lim
SJR Q1Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics

The major objective of this study is to estimate Korean food shoppers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for imported beef with traceability. We use an experimental elicitation method, the random nth price auction, to identify consumers’ valuation for traceable imported beef. We also analyse the effect of different types of information on these valuations. Results indicate that consumers are generally willing to pay a 39 per cent premium for the traceable imported beef over similar beef without traceabil

Consumer Acceptance of Gene-Edited versus Genetically Modified Foods in Korea
Eunae Son, Song Soo Lim
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

Food made with gene-editing has received considerable attention in recent years because it is claimed to be a little different from traditional genetically modified breeding methods concerning safety. However, consumer acceptance of these novel foods and their potential market uptake remains to be answered. This study aims to assess differences in the acceptance of gene-edited and genetically modified foods in Korea. The choice-based conjoint analysis is adopted to estimate part-worth functions

Gender Differences in the Relationship between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Employment: Evidence from the Korea Health Panel Study
Jeung-Hee Kim, Weon‐Young Lee, Song Soo Lim, Young Taek Kim, Yeon‐Pyo Hong
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

Previous studies have analyzed the impact of diabetes mellitus on labor market participation by men and women, but gender difference between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and employment has not been the focus. This study aims to explore gender differences between T2DM and employment status. Data from the Korea Health Panel Study, 2013–2015 were analyzed by distinguishingT2DM and non-diabetes (N = 11,216). The empirical model was established and the generalized two-stage least squares (2SLS) wa

Economic impacts of the European Union carding system on global fish trade
Dae Eui Kim, Song Soo Lim
SJR Q1Marine PolicyOA

Due to the rise in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the sustainable management of fishing resources is in jeopardy. The European Union (EU) is the first regional player to establish stringent guidelines to prevent, deter, and eliminate IUU fishing. The EU carding system administers the mandate for requiring a catch certificate. Using a system of yellow and red cards, countries that export fishery products to the EU are encouraged to lessen IUU fishing in their waters. The yell

Korea’s Tariff Rate Quota System: Impact of the Doha Development Agenda Proposals
임송수, DAVID BLANDFORD

The analysis in this paper shows that quota administration methods have a significant impact on fill rates for Korea’s TRQs. The proposed introduction of an under-fill mechanism in current Doha Round WTO negotiations, with a benchmark fill rate of 65 percent is likely to have important implications for Korea. According to our analysis, roughly 30 percent of current TRQ products would need to have increased imports. Static analysis using a tariff-quota equivalency test sheds light on whether it w

Assessing the Seafood Trade Diversion Arising from Economic Sanctions: Evidence from Russia and Western Countries
Chang Min Kim, Dae Eui Kim, Song Soo Lim
SJR Q1FoodsOA

Since 2014, economic sanctions between Russia and Western nations have significantly altered the global seafood trade. The consequent decline in bilateral trade also had spillover effects on the rest of the world (ROW). According to earlier studies, economic sanctions appear to negatively impact bilateral trade and income. However, few studies examine how Russian sanctions affect the world as a whole and estimate their effects on the fisheries industry. This study seeks to close this gap by quan

Market Power Analysis on Shrimp Import from Tropical Asia: The Korean Case
Dae Eui Kim, Song Soo Lim
OA

Shrimp is the most highly traded seafood product in the world. While tropical Asia is the leader in shrimp aquaculture and wild harvest, developed economies account for the lion’s share of global shrimp imports. Studies show market power issues arise from trade imbalances, regulatory standards, and the non-competitive structure of the market. Market power is largely defined as the ability to alter prices away from competitive levels or affect product quality and trade requirements. A market powe

Korea's approach to non-trade concerns in the World Trade Organisation
Song Soo Lim
SJR Q4International Journal of Agricultural Resources Governance and Ecology

Non-trade concerns (NTC) are legitimate issues for the WTO. Despite no technical definition being given, food security and environmental protection are referred to as NTC in the Agreement on Agriculture. Trade and policy implications for NTC are under discussion and regarded as the centrepiece of current negotiations. From Korea's perspective, this article identified food security, small-scale family farms, agricultural landscapes and rural viability as the country's key NTC. Based upon newly es

How Much Is It Worth to Protect Sensitive Products with Tariff-Rate Quotas?―A Korean Case
Song Soo Lim, Ronald A. Babula, Lim, Song-Soo, Babula, Ronald A.
AgEcon Search (University of Minnesota, USA)OA

The tariff-rate quota (TRQ) system is a hybrid import regime that conveys both tariff- and quota-like characteristics. Established by the tariffication process during the Uruguay Round, TRQs harmonize the needs for improved market access and protection from import surges. This paper aims to identify economic and policy consequences from TRQ implementation and to test whether the trade-off between formula tariff cuts and quota expansion is adequate and thus is beneficial to the protection of decl

Transition to Decoupled Rice Support and Its Production Effects in Korea
임송수

Abolishing a nearly 50-year-old policy for rice price support, Korea adopted a new direct payment program in 2005. Making the transition to decoupled income support has been governed by the need for operative and effective income safety nets and the WTO disciplines on domestic support. The program aims to deal with over-supply of rice while guarding against the threat of income insecurity. Integrated into a target price mechanism, the fixed and variable payments compensate part of farm income lo

Potential Trade Distortion Effects of State Trading Enterprises under the Tariff-Rate Quota Scheme
Jung-Hyun Yoon, Song Soo Lim
SJR Q2EconomicsOA

Abstract The paper analyzes the potential trade distortion effects of state trading enterprises (STEs) on soybean imports to Korea. Traditionally, STEs have exercised exclusive rights to import the so-called strategic products, to ensure food security, domestic price stabilization, and import mark-ups. However, STE imports have been criticized on the grounds that industries using soybeans as a raw material are unable to obtain a diverse mix of quality material and cannot exercise the “right to c

Agricultural landscapes consist of physical, biological and cultural elements and reflect the interaction between farming and the environment. Increasing recognition of landscape services and societal demand for the policy response require monitoring and evaluating the stock and state of agricultural landscapes. This study aims to propose indicators for agricultural landscape and their uses in policy design and implementation. The constructed indicators include terraced paddy fields, levees of e
