About the Lab
Professor Sung-woong Kang's research lab specializes in respiratory physiology and neuromuscular disease, with a primary focus on understanding and improving cough efficacy in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and other neuromuscular disorders (NMD). The lab investigates the critical role of both inspiratory and expiratory muscle function in maintaining effective airway clearance, particularly through measurements such as vital capacity (VC), maximum insufflation capacity (MIC), and peak cough flow (PCF). Key research directions include evaluating the impact of respiratory muscle strength on cough performance and comparing the effectiveness of various assisted cough techniques to optimize respiratory care.

15The greater the MIC VC difference, the greater the PCF, and, thereby, the ability to expel airway mucus and avert respiratory complications. The lower the VC, the greater the percent increase in MIC and the greater the percent increase in assisted PCF. Maximal insufflations are extremely important to increase PCF for patients with neuromuscular conditions who have VCs of < 1500 ml.
The function of inspiratory muscles is crucial for effective cough as well as expiratory muscles in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). However, there is no report on the correlation between cough and inspiratory muscle strength. To investigate the relationships of voluntary cough capacity, assisted cough techniques, and inspiratory muscle strength as well as expiratory muscle strength in patients with DMD (n= 32). The aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting cough ability, and to compare the assisted cough methods in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). A total seventy-one male patients with DMD were included in the study. The vital capacity (VC) and maximum insufflation capacity (MIC) were measured. The unassisted peak cough flow (UPCF) and three different techniques of assisted peak cough flow were evaluated. UPCF measurements were possible for all 71 subjects. But when per
In neuromuscular disease (NMD) patients with progressive muscle weakness, respiratory muscles are also affected and hypercapnia can increase gradually as the disease progresses. The fundamental respiratory problems NMD patients experience are decreased alveolar ventilation and coughing ability. For these reasons, it is necessary to precisely evaluate pulmonary function to provide the proper inspiratory and expiratory muscle aids in order to maintain adequate respiratory function. As inspiratory

This study aimed to systematically assess the informational reliability, quality, and educational suitability of videos introducing scoliosis exercises on TikTok. We retrieved and screened 1904 TikTok videos with the hashtags: "#scoliosis", "#scoliosisexercise", and "#scoliosistips", before collecting a final sample of 171 scoliosis exercises in March 2022. Then, two independent raters assessed the reliability and quality of the videos using the DISCERN instrument and evaluated the educational s
OBJECTIVE: This study compared transcutaneous carbon dioxide partial pressure (PtcCO2) and end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (PetCO2) monitoring during sleep for patients with neuromuscular disease. DESIGN: This is a retrospective study of patients whose PtcCO2 and PetCO2 were monitored before they began using noninvasive mechanical ventilation. The outcomes were divided into four groupings: group 1, both PtcCO2 and PetCO2 are greater than or equal to 49 mm Hg; group 2, PtcCO2 is greater
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by damage of motor neurons. Recent reports indicate that inflammatory responses occurring within the central nervous system contribute to the pathogenesis of ALS. We aimed to investigate disease-specific gene expression associated with neuroinflammation by conducting transcriptome analysis on fibroblasts from three patients with sporadic ALS and three normal controls. Several pathways were found to be u

The purpose of this study is to show the correlation between the range of spinal motion and the severity of chronic lower back pain. The subjects of this study were 40 female patients with chronic lower back pain over a 6 months' duration. The range of spinal and hip joint motion was measured with a electrogoniometer, and the severity of back pain was evaluated with the Rolland's score and Pollard's pain disability index. Results were as follows. There was a correlation between the severity of p
