About the Lab

Professor Sung Yoon-kyung's research lab specializes in rheumatology and osteoarthritis, with a strong focus on clinical epidemiology, musculoskeletal disorders, and the long-term outcomes of autoimmune diseases. The lab investigates the effectiveness and safety of pharmacological treatments for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, including NSAIDs and biologic DMARDs, while also exploring risk factors for comorbidities such as gastrointestinal complications, fractures, and malignancies. A key emphasis is placed on using real-world claims data and clinical databases to evaluate disease progression, treatment outcomes, and systemic damage in patients with conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. The lab also contributes to clinical guidelines, particularly in preventing and managing glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and related fractures.

In the overall analysis, etoricoxib, celecoxib, and aceclofenac had the highest rankings for improving WOMAC pain. The ability to improve knee OA symptoms may differ depending on baseline pain and radiologic features.

BACKGROUND: To identify knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients among OA patients in the claims database. METHODS: All patients with OA diagnostic codes for any sites (M15 to M19) in 2014 were recruited from a single academic referral hospital. After excluding patients who had inflammatory arthritis or were less than 50 years of age, we identified data for the overall OA population. Radiographic knee OA of Kellgren and Lawrence grades ≥2 is considered the gold standard for knee OA, and we evaluated th

The risk of malignancy and its incidence in early rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with biologic DMARDs

SJR Q1Arthritis Research & TherapyOA

BACKGROUND: Treatment with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) has raised concerns about the risk of malignancies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. However, the association between biologic DMARDs (bDMARDs) and malignancy in previous reports remains controversial. Therefore we aimed to estimate the incidence of malignancy in early RA patients and to evaluate the relative risk of malignancy with use of bDMARDs. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of incident RA patients was establish

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of systemic damage in Korean patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to elucidate associations between possible risk factors and the presence of damage. METHODS: The Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index (SDI) was used to quantify systemic damage in 588 patients who were enrolled consecutively at the Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Seoul, South Korea. The frequencies and means of each

SJR Q3International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the risks of overall and site-specific malignancies in Korean patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). METHODS: Using the Korean nationwide healthcare claims database, we constructed a retrospective cohort for prevalent pSS aged over 50 years. After enrollment between January 2012 and December 2014, patients were followed until the development of any malignancy, or until December 2015. Crude incidence rates of malignancies of pSS patients were calculated, and their
