About the Lab
Professor Sungji Choi's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal endoscopy, with a strong emphasis on endoscopic diagnosis, treatment of colorectal and biliary tract neoplasms, and the role of microbiome in gastrointestinal diseases. The lab investigates advanced endoscopic imaging, computer-aided diagnostic systems using artificial intelligence, and the impact of microbial dysbiosis in conditions such as gallbladder cancer and cholecystitis. Additionally, the lab explores minimally invasive therapeutic strategies, including endoscopic papillectomy and intragastric balloon therapy, with a focus on optimizing patient outcomes and safety.

We investigated the bile microbiome in normal, chronic cholecystitis, and gallbladder cancer. We suggest possible roles of Enterobacteriaceae, including <i>Klebsiella</i>, in gallbladder carcinogenesis. Our findings reveal a possible link between a dysbiotic bile microbiome and the development of chronic calculous cholecystitis and gallbladder cancer.
