About the Lab
Professor Sunjin Hwang's research lab specializes in posterior segment ophthalmology, with a focus on the biomechanical and microvascular changes in retinal and optic nerve head (ONH) pathologies. The lab investigates the role of imaging technologies—particularly optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA)—in assessing structural and functional outcomes following retinal and vitreoretinal surgeries. Key research directions include understanding the pathogenesis and prevention of neovascular glaucoma in diabetic retinopathy, evaluating the impact of surgical interventions such as phacovitrectomy and intravitreal bevacizumab, and exploring systemic-metabolic correlates (e.g., bioimpedance parameters) in diabetic macular edema. The lab integrates clinical ophthalmology with advanced imaging and biostatistical analysis to improve patient outcomes in diabetic and degenerative retinal diseases.

15We found significant morphologic changes in the ONH in both abduction and adduction and these changes were associated with AXL. Considering these morphologic changes as physical properties, it allows a better understanding of the biomechanical characteristics of the ONH.
To evaluate the effectiveness of postoperative intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) in preventing neovascular glaucoma (NVG) and identify associated risk factors in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) undergoing phacovitrectomy. Patients with PDR who underwent phacovitrectomy were enrolled and categorized into two subgroups based on their postoperative treatment regimen: one group received IVB within 2 months following phacovitrectomy (Group 1); the other did not receive IVB during
This study aimed to compare findings of optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography (OCTA) between eyes with nearly recovered and partially recovered outer retina after full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) surgery and to identify OCTA findings associated with visual acuity. We retrospectively reviewed 30 patients who underwent surgery for idiopathic FTMH. Swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) and OCTA were performed preoperatively and at three and six months postoperatively. Subgroups were divided accordin
To investigate the incidence and risk factors for neovascular glaucoma (NVG) after vitrectomy in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Patients were categorized into two subgroups based on their treatment regimen: one group received vitrectomy only (Group 1), while the other received combined phacovitrectomy (Group 2). A comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the distinguishing characteristics of the two groups. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to determine the i
We examined the association between bioimpedance profiles and optical coherence tomography (OCT) features in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME). This cross-sectional study included 100 eyes of 100 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The systemic fluid status was assessed using extracellular water-to-total body water ratio (ECW/TBW) and phase angle (PhA), which was measured using bioimpedance equipment. ECW/TBW was higher in the DR (diabetic retinopathy) with DME group than in the no

We aimed to investigate the repeatability of various corneal measurements according to topographical location in the entire cornea measured by dual rotating Scheimpflug-Placido camera and to explore the differences in repeatability between patients with mild dry eye and those with normal eyes. In both the normal and dry eye groups, divided based on BUT or the height of the tear film, there were no statistically significant differences in the ratio of unacceptable variation (RUV) and ICC. The con
Purpose The association between central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is debated. We aimed to investigate this link using a novel artificial intelligence (AI)-based retinal biomarker. Methods This retrospective study included 109 CSC patients and 1028 non-CSC controls without pre-existing CVD. A validated AI software (Dr.Noon CVD) analyzed retinal images to generate a five-year CVD risk score. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) to bala
Oculomics — the concept of predicting systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and dementia, through retinal imaging — has advanced rapidly due to the data efficiency of transformer-based foundation models like RETFound. Image-level mixed sample data augmentations, such as CutMix and MixUp, are frequently used for training transformers, yet these techniques perturb patient-specific attributes, such as medical comorbidity and clinical factors, since they only account for images and label
