About the Lab

Professor Sunmi Jang's research lab focuses on periodontal tissue engineering and the preservation of dental cells under extreme conditions, with an emphasis on maintaining periodontal ligament cell viability for potential regenerative applications. The lab also investigates the integration of infectious disease management—particularly in the context of public health emergencies like COVID-19—into dental education and clinical practice. Their work bridges biomedical research with clinical dentistry, addressing both cellular survival mechanisms and the educational preparedness of future dentists in managing infectious diseases. The lab's research is characterized by a translational approach, combining in vivo cell viability assays with curriculum analysis in dental education.

Evaluation of the Viability of Rat Periodontal Ligament Cells after Storing at 0oC/2 MPa Condition up to One Week: In Vivo MTT Method
장선미, 조신연, 김의성, 정일영, 이승종

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the rat periodontal ligament cell viability under 0oC/2 MPa condition up to one week using in vivo 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-y1)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Materials and Methods: As soon as 110 upper molar teeth of rats were extracted, they were stored in Hartman’s solution under 0oC/2 MPa condition for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 days each. All specimens were treated with in vivo MTT assay and the value of optical density was measured by ELI

To assess whether dental colleges provide education on effectively managing infectious diseases within the role of dentists as primary care providers for infectious diseases such as COVID-19, a total of 11 domestic dental colleges were examined. The aim was to evaluate whether their curricula included education on managing infectious diseases including severe post-vaccination adverse reactions and the legal aspects pertinent to infectious diseases. Through the analysis of detailed items, eight c
