About the Lab
Professor Tae-Hoon Jeon's research lab focuses on immunology and tumor microenvironment, with a central emphasis on innate-like T cells such as natural killer T (NKT) cells and regulatory T cells. The lab investigates the development, selection, and functional regulation of these immune cells, particularly their roles in immune tolerance, inflammation, and cancer immunosuppression. Key research directions include the signaling mechanisms of inhibitory receptors like LAG-3, the impact of radiation-induced senescence on glioblastoma recurrence, and the role of CD1d-restricted NKT cells in modulating immune responses. The lab also explores how metabolic and inflammatory pathways, such as GAS6-AXL signaling and NLRP3 inflammasome activation, influence disease progression in liver inflammation and cancer.

15Natural killer T (NKT) cells are a unique immunoregulatory T cell population that is positively selected by CD1d-expressing thymocytes. Previous studies have shown that NKT cells exhibit autoreactivity, which raises the question of whether they are subject to negative selection. Here, we report that the addition of agonist glycolipid alpha-galactosylceramide (alpha-GalCer) to a fetal thymic organ culture (FTOC) induces a dose-dependent disappearance of NKT cells, suggesting that NKT cells are su
). Hence, GAS6-AXL signaling-mediated autophagy induction in murine macrophages ameliorates hepatic inflammatory responses by inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation.
Lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3; CD223), a structural homolog of CD4, binds to MHC class II molecules. Recent research indicated that signaling mediated by LAG-3 inhibits T cell proliferation, and LAG-3 serves as a key surface molecule for the function of regulatory T cells. Previous reports demonstrated that the majority of LAG-3 is retained in the intracellular compartments and is rapidly translocated to the cell surface upon stimulation. However, the mechanism by which LAG-3 translocates
Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-restricted CD8(+) T cells play a critical role in the protective immunity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). However, only a few Mtb peptides recognized by MHC class Ia-restricted CD8(+) T cells have been identified. Information on epitopes recognized by class Ib-restricted T cells is even more limited. M3 is an MHC class Ib molecule that preferentially presents N-formylated peptides to CD8(+) T cells. Because bacteria initiate protein synthe
Upon antigenic stimulation, CD1d-restricted NKT cells quickly secrete large amounts of cytokines. This prompt response demonstrates that CD1d-restricted NKT cells may potentially prove to be useful therapeutic agents for the treatment of many diseases. Despite the clinical importance of CD1d-restricted NKT cells, the regulating mechanisms of this unique T cell population remain to be defined. We found murine LAG-3 is inducible on CD1d-restricted NKT cells as the result of a variety of stimulants
Most glioblastomas frequently recur at sites of radiotherapy, but it is unclear if changes in the tumor microenvironment due to radiotherapy influence glioblastoma recurrence. Here, we demonstrate that radiation-induced senescent glioblastoma cells exhibit a senescence-associated secretory phenotype that functions through NFκB signaling to influence changes in the tumor microenvironment, such as recruitment of Ly6G + inflammatory cells and vessel formation. In particular, Ly6G + cells promote co
CD1 is an MHC class I-like molecule that has been conserved throughout mammalian evolution. Unlike MHC class I molecules, CD1 can present unique nonprotein antigens to T cells. The murine CD1 locus contains two highly homologous genes, CD1d1 and CD1d2. CD1d1 is essential for the development of a major subset of NK T cells that promptly secrete IL-4 following activation. However, the function of CD1d2 has not yet been demonstrated. In the present study, we examined the expression of CD1d2 in CD1d
AIMS: In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of selected probiotics in a mouse model of birch pollen (BP)-induced allergic rhinitis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Oral administration of Lactobacillus plantarum CJLP133 and CJLP243 ameliorated the symptoms of BP-induced allergic rhinitis by reducing airway hyperresponsiveness, and both the histological scores and the number of infiltrated cells in the nasal cavities and lungs. Compared with those from vehicle-treated mice, bronchoalveolar lav
Much effort is underway to define the immunological functions of the CD1 multigene family, which encodes a separate lineage of Ag presentation molecules capable of presenting lipid and glycolipid Ags. To identify porcine CD1 homologues, a cosmid library was constructed and screened with a degenerate CD1 alpha3 domain probe. One porcine CD1 gene (pCD1.1) was isolated and fully characterized. The pCD1.1 gene is organized similarly to MHC class I and other CD1 genes and contains an open reading fra
H2-M3 is a MHC class Ib molecule with a high propensity to bind N-formylated peptides. Due to the paucity of endogenous Ag, the majority of M3 is retained in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Upon addition of exogenous N-formylated peptides, M3 trafficks rapidly to the cell surface. To understand the mechanism underlying Ag presentation by M3, we examined the role of molecular chaperones in M3 assembly, particularly TAP and tapasin. M3-specific CTLs fail to recognize cells isolated from both TAP-d
