About the Lab

Professor Tae-kyung Hong's research lab specializes in regional seismic wave propagation, with a focus on Lg wave attenuation and crustal structure imaging in tectonically active regions such as the Korean Peninsula and surrounding areas. The lab investigates seismicity changes induced by large distant earthquakes, particularly the stress triggering effects of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, and conducts probabilistic analysis of historical earthquake records. Using dense seismic networks in Korea and Japan, the lab performs advanced seismic tomography to reveal lithospheric structures and tectonic imprints, especially through Pn wave travel-time tomography. Their work contributes significantly to understanding regional seismic hazards and crustal dynamics in collision and rift zones.

Abstract The seismicity in the Korean Peninsula has increased since the 2011 M w 9.0 Tohoku‐Oki megathrust earthquake. Abstract The distance-dependent coseismic and postseismic displacements produced by the 2011 M W 9.0 Tohoku-Oki megathrust earthquake caused medium weakening and stress perturbation in the crust around the Korean Peninsula, increasing the seismicity with successive M L 5-level earthquakes at the outskirts of high seismicity regions. Pn Travel-Time Tomography of the Paleo-Continental-Collision and Rifting Zone around Korea and Japan

Abstract A recent dense deployment of seismic stations in South Korea and Japan allows regional seismic imaging of the far-east Asian region that experienced continental collisions and riftings. We perform seismic imaging based on a mantle-lid P -wave ( Pn ) travel-time tomography to exploit the tectonic imprints in the lithosphere.
