About the Lab

Professor Tae-yul Kim's research lab specializes in translational biomedical research, focusing on cancer biology, hematological malignancies, and genetic factors in autoimmune diseases. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms underlying acute myeloid leukemia and psoriasis, with an emphasis on identifying genetic markers and improving treatment outcomes through targeted therapies. It also explores innovative regenerative medicine approaches using organoid technology for drug development and precision medicine applications.

Immune-related adverse events, including immune hemolytic anemia, have been reported in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. In particular, RBC autoantibodies are important because they can cause hemolytic anemia and interfere with pre-transfusion tests. On the other hand, there are few reports on the characteristics of RBC autoantibodies induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors in Korea. The medical history and laboratory results, including pretransfusion tests of ten patients tre

Cis-AB and B(A) alleles encode an ABO enzyme with dual A and B glycosyltransferase activity. Although globally rare, the cis-AB phenotype is found relatively often in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese populations. Cases of the B(A) allele have been reported mostly in the Chinese population. Forward typing performed in a Cambodian woman with an ABO discrepancy demonstrated a strong reaction with anti-A and anti-B reagents, while there was no reaction with lectin anti-A1. The anti-A1 antibody was dete

Weak D type 102 allele (RHD*01W.102) carrying a missense variant (c.73A>T, p.Ile25Phe) in exon 1 of the RHD has not been reported in Koreans to date. This is the first report of the weak D type 102 allele in the Korean population. The proposita, a 35-year-old woman, showed a serological weak D phenotype in routine RhD typing. Sequencing of all 10 RHD exons and zygosity testing targeting the hybrid Rhesus box revealed this proposita to harbor the weak D type 102 allele, as well as an RHD deletion

Performance of an AI-based automated feces analyzer compared with the formalin-ether concentration technique for intestinal parasite detection: a diagnostic accuracy study
Yu Hui-Jin,
Annals of Clinical Microbiology

Background: To overcome the labor-intensive and technician-dependent nature of the formalin–ether concentration technique (FECT), artificial intelligence (AI)-based automated feces analyzers have been developed for detecting fecal parasites. This study compared the clinical performance of the KU-F40 AI-based automated system with that of FECT in a routine diagnostic environment. Methods: In total, 1,011 fecal samples were prospectively collected and analyzed concurrently via both FECT and the

Impact of nontuberculous mycobacteria on the performance of Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra for the detection of tuberculosis and rifampin resistance: a diagnostic accuracy study
Annals of Clinical Microbiology

Background: The growing burden of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) raises concerns regarding cross-reactivity in molecular tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics. In the current study, we evaluated whether high NTM loads affect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) detection or rifampin (RIF) resistance calls using Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert) and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Xpert Ultra). Methods: In vitro spiking experiments were performed by mixing eight NTM species (1 × 106 colony-forming unit [CFU]/mL) with heat-inact
