About the Lab

Professor Whal Lee's research lab specializes in medical imaging, with a focus on advanced cross-sectional and vascular imaging techniques for early diagnosis and assessment of vascular diseases, tumors, and musculoskeletal disorders. The lab investigates the diagnostic value of CT, ultrasound, and perfusion imaging in conditions such as carotid atherosclerosis, meningiomas, and varicose veins, emphasizing accurate characterization and response monitoring. Key research directions include optimizing imaging protocols, improving tumor and plaque detection, and correlating imaging findings with clinical outcomes.

General principles of carotid Doppler ultrasonography
Whal Lee
SJR Q1ULTRASONOGRAPHYOA

Carotid Doppler ultrasonography is a popular tool for evaluating atherosclerosis of the carotid artery. Its two-dimensional gray scale can be used for measuring the intima-media thickness, which is very good biomarker for atherosclerosis and can aid in plaque characterization. The plaque morphology is related to the risk of stroke. The ulceration of plaque is also known as one of the strong predictors of future embolic event risk. Color Doppler ultrasonography and pulse Doppler ultrasonography h

Clear-cell meningioma is a rare disease entity showing a more aggressive nature, clinically, than those of other subtypes of meningioma. It occurs in younger persons and commonly in the spinal canal. The recurrence rate has been reported to be as high as 60%. We present a case of clear-cell meningioma in a 17-year-old man in whom initial MR imaging showed localized leptomeningeal enhancement that had progressed into the entire subarachnoid space after surgical resection of the primary tumor.

The Role of Perfusion CT as a Follow-up Modality After Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization

SJR Q1Investigative Radiology

We believe that perfusion CT is a feasible alternative modality for the successful early response assessment and early detection of a marginally recurred tumor after TACE. However, perfusion CT has limitations for the prediction of tumor recurrence after TACE.

SJR Q2Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this series is to describe the ultrasonographic and computed tomographic (CT) findings of superficial venous aneurysms sometimes misdiagnosed as subcutaneous soft tissue tumors. METHODS: Two of the patients had an asymptomatic subcutaneous mass that gradually increased in size; the third patient had a superficial mass in the right antecubital fossa associated with pain and occasional edema. All of the patients were examined with ultrasonography, and 2 had CT scans. RESU

SJR Q1American Journal of Roentgenology

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to verify the imaging quality of CT venography in the clinical evaluation of the lower extremity superficial venous system and to correlate the CT and duplex sonographic findings about varicose veins. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: One hundred consecutively registered patients with varicose veins underwent CT venography. The image quality of overall 3D volume rendering was rated, and the absolute attenuation of each component at the level of the knee was measured.
