About the Lab

Professor Woo Il Kwon's research lab specializes in clinical and translational oncology, with a primary focus on gastrointestinal malignancies such as pancreatic and gallbladder cancer. The lab investigates neoadjuvant treatment strategies, surgical outcomes, and prognostic factors in borderline resectable and locally advanced pancreatic cancer, as well as tumor characteristics and recurrence patterns in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) and gallbladder polyps. The lab also contributes to control theory applications in engineering, particularly in stabilizing time-varying and differential-difference systems, demonstrating a unique interdisciplinary approach. Their work bridges clinical oncology with systems engineering to improve patient outcomes through evidence-based treatment protocols and mathematical modeling.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine whether neoadjuvant treatment increases survival in patients with BRPC. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Despite many promising retrospective data on the effect of neoadjuvant treatment for borderline resectable pancreatic cancer (BRPC), no high-level evidence exists to support the role of such treatment. METHODS: This phase 2/3 multicenter randomized controlled trial was designed to enroll 110 patients with BRPC who were randomly assigned to gemcitabine-

Stabilizing state-feedback design via the moving horizon method
Wooil Kwon, Alfred M. Bruckstein⋆, T. Kailath
SJR Q2International Journal of Control

Abstract A stabilizing control design for general linear time varying systems is presented and analysed. The control is a state-feedback law with gains determined by a standard method employed in optimal regulator problems. The considered cost function is, however, dynamically redefined over a fixed depth horizon. The method is shown to yield a stable closed-loop system and computationally efficient recursions for the feedback gain are provided

Pancreatic IPMNs recur in 10.7% of patients. Recurrence is correlated with the degree of dysplasia, and 5.4% of patients with benign or noninvasive IPMN have recurrences including distant metastasis. Thorough postoperative surveillance is needed not only for patients with invasive IPMN but also for those with benign or noninvasive IPMN, especially for patients with high-grade dysplasia.

Clinicopathologic Features of Polypoid Lesions of the Gallbladder and Risk Factors of Gallbladder Cancer
Wooil Kwon, Jin‐Young Jang, Seung Eun Lee, Dae Wook Hwang, Sun‐Whe Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

It is difficult to differentiate benign and malignancy in polypoid lesions of the gallbladder (PLG) by solely depending on imaging studies. Therefore clinicopathologic features of benign and malignant polyps are compared in an attempt to identify the risk factors of malignant polypoid lesions. The medical records of 291 patients who were confirmed to have PLG through cholecystectomy were reviewed and analyzed for age, sex, symptom, associated gallstone, morphology of PLG, size of PLG, number of

BACKGROUND: In gallbladder cancer, stage T2 is subdivided by tumour location into lesions on the peritoneal side (T2a) or hepatic side (T2b). For tumours on the peritoneal side (T2a), it has been suggested that liver resection may be omitted without compromising the prognosis. However, data to validate this argument are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of tumour location in T2 gallbladder cancer, and to clarify the adequate extent of surgical resection. METHODS: Clin

A note on feedback stabilization of a differential-difference system
Wooil Kwon, A. E. Pearson
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control

Sufficient conditions for linear constant differential-difference systems to be memory-less stabilizable are derived. The proof is constructive in that an easily computable stabilizing feedback control law is obtained. The results in this note are stronger than some stabilization results in [1], [2], and [4].

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the associated factors and prognosis according to pathology and margin after surgical resection of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN). BACKGROUND: There is limited information on recurrence patterns according to pathology and margin in IPMN. METHODS: Total 577 patients who underwent operation for IPMN at a tertiary center were included. SJR Q1CancersOA

The current guidelines on branch duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (BD-IPMN) recommend various predictive features of malignancy as well as different treatment strategies. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for malignancy with higher level of evidence. A meta-analysis was performed on 40 literatures published between 2000 and 2019. These literatures included 6301 patients with pathologically proven IPMN. Malignancy was defined as high-grade dysplasia and invasive carci

INTRODUCTION: The prognostic factors of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (PNET) are unclear, and the treatment guidelines are insufficient. This study aimed to suggest a treatment algorithm for PNET based on risk factors for recurrence in a large cohort. METHODS: Data of 918 patients who underwent curative intent surgery for PNET were collected from 14 tertiary centers. Risk factors for recurrence and survival analyses were performed. RESULTS: The 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 86.5%

Linear systems with two-point boundary Lyapunov and Riccati equations
Wooil Kwon, A. E. Pearson
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control

This paper extends some well-known system theories for algebraic Lyapunov and Riccati equations. These extended results deal with the existence and uniqueness properties of the solutions to matrix differential equations with two-point boundary conditions and are shown to include conventional results as special cases. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived under which linear systems are stabilizable with periodic feedback gains derived from the two-point boundary matrix differential equa

Journal of the Korean Surgical SocietyOA

PURPOSE: Consensus for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) related perforation management is lacking. We aimed to identify candidate patients for conservative management by examining treatment results and to introduce a simple, algorithm-based management guideline. METHODS: A retrospective review of 53 patients with ERCP-related perforation between 2000 and 2010 was conducted. Data on perforation site (duodenum lateral wall or jejunum, type I; para-Vaterian, type II), managemen
