Professor Woo-Ki Kim's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms linking dietary lipids, mitochondrial metabolism, and immune regulation, particularly in innate and adaptive immune cells. The lab investigates how specific fatty acids—such as n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), and bioactive lipids from natural sources like turmeric, rice bran oil, and neohesperidin—modulate immune cell function through lipid raft organization, mitochondrial respiration, and metabolic reprogramming. A central theme is the role of membrane microdomains and mitochondrial energy metabolism in controlling pro- and anti-inflammatory responses, with translational applications in developing functional foods and nutraceuticals for immune-related diseases. The lab integrates in vitro cell models, in vivo disease models, and advanced metabolic phenotyping techniques such as oxygen consumption rate (OCR) analysis to dissect lipid-immune crosstalk.
