Professor Woo-Yong Won's research lab specializes in neuroimaging and neurovascular disorders, with a focus on understanding the pathophysiology of brain edema, hydrocephalus, and intracranial hemorrhage. The lab investigates the role of imaging biomarkers—particularly Hounsfield units (HU) from CT scans—in assessing bone mineral density and its correlation with neurological outcomes after subarachnoid hemorrhage and meningioma. They also explore molecular mechanisms in glioblastoma, particularly the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and its immunosuppressive effects, using bioinformatics and in silico methods. Surgical occlusion of paraclinoid ICA aneurysms is difficult; however, no significant differences were observed in the treatment results or complications when compared with coil embolization. In particular, use of an adequate surgical technique may lead to better outcomes than those for coil embolization in the treatment of large and/or wide-neck paraclinoid ICA aneurysms.

Early variations of laboratory parameters predicting shunt-dependent hydrocephalus after subarachnoid hemorrhage

Despite the exploratory nature of this study, we found that higher sodium, lower potassium, and higher glucose levels were predictive values for shunt-dependent hydrocephalus from postoperative day (POD) 1 to POD 12-16 after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Strict correction of electrolyte imbalance seems necessary to reduce shunt-dependent hydrocephalus. Further large studies are warranted to confirm our findings.
